The Business of HR : Weblog

Equal footing

June 04, 2012 - by Mark

?

Recently I had a lively discussion regarding the HR program at Adelphi being a ?step child? to the finance curriculum. I drew parallels to the business world. Then I shared an analogy to the book (movie) ?Money ball? where the Oakland A?s were driven by the bottom line $ decision making of its owners. When you look at the team featured in the book from the early 2000?s the most important executive was not the CFO, or even the team?s manager. It was their GM (general manager) Billy Bean, who in any other organization would be the VP of Talent or maybe even the head of HR.

?

So here?s my point: People decisions and management incorporating metrics is more important than any other aspect of building a team (in baseball or business). Maybe HR deserves a little more respect on campus and in business too!
