Bangalore, Aug 18 (TruthDive): The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) arrested four Chinese national at Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) charging them for smuggling red sandalwood a seized consignment.
The CISF sources alleged the four men were about to board the flight CA 426 and flew from Bangalore to Chengdu in South West China. Investigations revealed that the men were having a possession of 202.20 kg of red sandalwood.
The four men who were known as Chen Fangzheng, Lin Hanshou, Xiao Qihong and Zeng Jianzhong were feeling uneasy when their hand baggage came for checking, said the officials.
?While the officers were scanning the baggage a small block was recovered from one of the bags. After which some more blocks were recovered from other bags as well,? said the officers. The CISF officers suspected the blocks to be of red sandalwood. The officers at once called upon the custom officials who reached the spot in a short while. ?After the custom officials confirmed the blocks to be red sandalwood, the four men were taken into custody,? assumed the officers.
?It was shocking to know that all the bags were unloaded, inside which 200 kg of one-and-a-half-foot-long sandalwood logs were kept,? stated the officers. The four men were handed over to the customs officials, who are investigating the Chinese nationals, said the police.
Red Sandalwood is often found in the forests of South India, particularly in Andhra Pradesh as well as Nepal. It is a product of rare species and is protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora to which India is a signatory.
Red sandalwood which is popularly known as Rakta Chandana is highly valid in China where it is utilized for making furniture as well as for preparing some drugs. The wood that was smuggled by the Chinese men was estimated to be around Rs 10 lakh in the market.
