Google?s location-aware Field Trip tour guide app now serves up local deals, courtesy of Scoutmob

Back in September we reported on Field Trip, a new location-aware tour guide Android app from Google?s Niantic Labs.

In a nutshell, Field Trip helps surface ?cool, hidden, and unique? things about the world around you. It runs in the background and, when you approach something it deems interesting, a card pops up on your handset with details about the location. It can even read the information out to you, if you?re wearing earphones.

You simply set the type and number of alerts you want to see, be it local businesses, historical facts, landmarks, art and culture, and you?re good to go. While it?s Android-only for now, an iOS version is expected shortly.

Now Scoutmob, an app development startup that delivers digital, location-based coupons and curated content to a user?s phone (US only), is bringing its service to Field Trip.

The last time we caught up with the Atlanta-based company it had just secured $3.25 million in funding, so it?s good to see the company going strong. Indeed, Scoutmob is the first such partner for Field Trip, and it makes a lot of sense for both companies ? you can be wandering along a main road, and the app will alert you to a Scoutmob deal in a place up a back alley, just as you walk past it.

As it stands, Field Trip taps the database of companies such as Thrillist, Zagat (acquired by Google), Yesterland,?Cool Hunting and Curbed, to serve up suggestions to the user, so Scoutmob is in good company.

Scoutmob has existing deals in place with Foursquare and Foodspotting, in addition to its own iOS and Android apps, to help distribute hundreds of Scoutmob discounts across the US.

The updated app should be going live later today.
