Ukraine court upholds Tymoshenko conviction

Ukraine's high court on Wednesday upheld former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko's conviction and seven-year jail sentence for abuse of power linked to a disputed 2009 gas deal with Russia.

"The judicial panel has ruled that the appeal filed by Tymoshenko is not subject to approval," judge Olexander Elfimov told the court.

"The judicial panel found no grounds for the appeal," the judge said.

The ruling by Ukraine's highest court means that Tymoshenko has now exhausted her domestic legal recourse and is free to appeal her full case before the European Court of Human Rights.

About 100 supporters of the 2004 pro-democracy Orange Revolution co-leader waved Tymoshenko's Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party flags during a quiet rally held outside the Kiev courtroom.

Both the defence and most Western nations view the charges as politically motivated and have urged President Viktor Yanukovych to take measures that would lead to his great rival's release.

Tymoshenko struck the gas deal during a cut in Russian deliveries that came in the middle of a winter prices dispute.

Yanukovych argues that Tymoshenko overstepped her authority in agreeing the deal without required consultations and says he is only waging a campaign for clean government.

Study of tribe could help find East Asian skin color genes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Genetic investigation of a Malaysian tribe may tell scientists why East Asians have light skin but lower skin cancer rates than Europeans, according to a team of international researchers. Understanding the differences could lead to a better way to protect people from skin cancer.

While the genetics of skin color is largely unknown, past research using zebrafish by Penn State College of Medicine's Keith Cheng, M.D., Ph.D., identified the gene in Europeans that differs from West Africans and contributes to a lighter skin color. Mutations in the genes SLC24A5 and SLC45A2 are largely responsible for European pigmentation, showing only single amino acid differences between Europeans and West Africans. Each version of a gene is called an allele.

While East Asians -- Chinese, Japanese and Korean -- also are light skinned, these European alleles are not present, suggesting that while both groups' lighter skin color evolved to allow for better creation of vitamin D in northern climates, they did so in a different way. This difference also affects skin cancer rates. Europeans have 10 to 20 times higher rates of melanoma than Africans. However, despite also having lighter skin, East Asians have the same melanoma rates as Africans. The reason for this difference can only be explained when the gene mutations for both groups are found.

"By finding the differences, we have the potential to find ways to make people with the European ancestry genes less susceptible to skin cancer," said Cheng, professor of pathology.

This is a challenge, because to find the unidentified mutations, researchers must study a population that includes a blend of original African ancestry and East Asian ancestry, with little European contribution.

The Senoi, one of three indigenous tribes from Peninsular Malaysia, meet this condition. The Senoi are believed to include ancestry of a dark-skinned tribe called the Negrito, and a regional Mongoloid population of Indo-China, such as the Proto-Malay. Since the skin color of the Senoi is darker than that of Northeast Asians, researchers will be able to focus on finding the primary genetic mutation of light skin color in Asians without seeing further skin lightening mutations.

Khai C. Ang, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow in the Cheng lab, visited the Senoi, developed a positive relationship with them, and was able to collect 371 blood samples. Characterization of the Senoi's skin color was recently reported in PLoS ONE.

"As the world is becoming globalized, populations are becoming increasingly mixed," Ang said. "Time is running out and it will become increasingly difficult to establish how East Asian skin colors evolved."

The researchers will now map genes in the DNA using the collected samples to identify which might be responsible for the skin color of East Asians. In the Cheng lab, the candidate genes and mutations can then be tested in zebrafish for verification.

"Skin color has been tied to human welfare in modern history," Cheng said. "It is important for us as a species to realize that our skin color is determined by only a small number of minute changes in our DNA -- changes that have nothing to do with the value of human beings."

Sporting KC loses Bunbury for season to hurt knee

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Sporting Kansas City will have to chase an Eastern Conference championship without forward Teal Bunbury, who will miss the remainder of the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee during a draw with the New York Red Bulls.

The team announced the extent of the injury Monday, one day after Bunbury was hurt while leaping to make a pass to Kei Kamara for Sporting KC's only goal of the game. Bunbury crashed to the turf and held his knee, but played several more minutes before he was substituted out.

The team initially called the injury a sprain, but coach Peter Vermes said that Bunbury would undergo an MRI exam on Monday. That's when the extent of the injury was revealed.

Bunbury tore the ACL and damaged the LCL in his knee. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Scott Luallin is scheduled to perform surgery on Friday, and Bunbury is expected to miss six to eight months.

"The injury is extremely unfortunate, but Teal has a great attitude and he will be back stronger than ever," Vermes said in a statement issued by the team.

Bunbury is a big reason why Sporting KC (14-7-5) leads the East by two points over the Red Bulls with eight games remaining in the regular season.

The former fourth overall draft pick is tied with C.J. Sapong for second on the team with five goals, and he also has one assist in 22 regular season games. He trails only Kamara, the team's leading scorer, and Graham Zusi for the most shots on goal.

Bunbury led Sporting KC with 11 goals in MLS competition last season.

The knee injury will also rule Bunbury out of potential international duty. He debuted for the U.S. men's national team in November 2010, and has played several games since, assisting on Zusi's winning goal in a game against Panama in January.

The U.S. resumes World Cup qualifying at Jamaica on Sept. 7, and is scheduled to play at Sporting KC's Livestrong Sporting Park against Guatemala on Oct. 16.

Can Curiosity Mars mission inspire like Apollo?

In this image released by NASA on Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, a photo taken by the Mast Camera (MastCam) highlights the geology of Mount Sharp, a mountain inside Gale Crater, where the rover landed. Prior to the rover's landing on Mars, observations from orbiting satellites indicated that the lower reaches of Mount Sharp, below the line of white dots, are composed of relatively flat-lying strata that bear hydrated minerals. Those orbiter observations did not reveal hydrated minerals in the higher, overlying strata. The MastCam data now reveal a strong discontinuity in the strata above and below the line of white dots, agreeing with the data from orbit. Strata overlying the line of white dots are highly inclined (dipping from left to right) relative to lower, underlying strata. The inclination of these strata above the line of white dots is not obvious from orbit. This provides independent evidence that the absence of hydrated minerals on the upper reaches of Mount Sharp may coincide with a very different formation environment than lower on the slopes. The train of white dots may represent an "unconformity," or an area where the process of sedimentation stopped. (AP Photo/NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS)

(AP) ? Neil Armstrong inspired millions with his moonwalk. Can a feisty robotic rover exploring Mars do the same for another generation? With manned missions beyond the International Space Station on hold, the spotlight has turned on machines.

While it did not rise to Armstrong's "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," interest was so high in the rover Curiosity's "seven minutes of terror" approach to the red planet earlier this month that NASA's website crashed. The rover last week beamed home photographs of its first wheel tracks on the Martian soil since its daredevil landing

"There's something exciting about reaching another place in the solar system. If you think about the kind of interest the landing of Curiosity had, you get a sense of that," said Smithsonian Institution space curator Roger Launius. It wasn't on the same level as Armstrong's feat, "but it was pretty darn exciting," he said.

When Armstrong, then fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin, stepped on the moon on July 29, 1969, an estimated 600 million people watched and listened. "Virtually the entire world took that memorable journey with us," recalled Buzz Aldrin after Armstrong's death on Saturday.

Early in the Space Age, the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts were the public face of NASA's space endeavor while the unmanned lunar missions that paved the way were in the shadows. The public craved adventure and the manned missions delivered. Aiming for the moon was new and exciting ? not to mention dangerous ? and the U.S. was locked in a Cold War space race with the Soviets.

Next, the space shuttle ferried a new crop of astronauts to low-Earth orbit, but after three decades of service, it became routine. And the Cold War thawed with the Russians and Americans cooperating on the Russian space station Mir and the International Space Station.

With the space shuttle fleet retired, the space station is all that's left. Its crew of six for the most part quietly goes about doing its job about 250 miles above the Earth. President Barack Obama nixed plans for returning astronauts to the moon in favor of landing on an asteroid and eventually Mars.

These days, space exploration is carried out by robotic spacecraft ? commanded by human handlers on Earth. Advances in technology have allowed unmanned spacecraft to go farther and peer deeper, with craft circling Mercury, Saturn, asteroid Vesta and others headed for Jupiter and dwarf planet Pluto. The twin Voyager craft are still going strong at the fringes of the solar system 35 years after their launch in 1977.

American University space policy analyst Howard McCurdy said today's generation of explorers was raised on technology and tends to get more jazzed about delivering a car-size rover to Mars.

"Robotic exploration has taken more of a center stage," he said. "It gets more publicity now than the International Space Station."

When the first Mars rover Sojourner landed in 1997, science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke rephrased Armstrong's famous line and said the event was "one small step for the rover."

Three other rovers have followed including Curiosity, which landed Aug. 5 by executing an intricate routine that ended with it being lowered by cables to the surface. Curiosity's acrobatics proved so popular that some 1.1 million people now follow it on Twitter (the tweets are being written by the public affairs office at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $2.5 billion mission.)

Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger said Monday the wheel prints on Mars may turn out to be an iconic image just like those first boot prints on the lunar surface.

"Instead of a human, it's a robot pretty much doing the same thing," he said.

Henry Lambright, a professor of public policy and space scholar at Syracuse University, said while Curiosity is inspiring, the world still needs to send humans beyond low-Earth orbit.

"It can't inspire to the degree that Apollo did because a robot can't inspire the way a man can," Lambright said.

On Monday, NASA played a recording from Administrator Charles Bolden that had been sent up to the rover on Mars and relayed back to Earth. In it, he thanked scientists and engineers for their achievement.

David Lavery of NASA headquarters said the hope is that someone will be inspired by Bolden's message and become the first human to stand on Mars.

"Like the great Neil Armstrong, they'll be able to speak aloud ? the first person at that point, of the next giant leap in human exploration," he said.

An Investor-Driven Recovery - Norada Real Estate Investments

An Investor-Driven Home RecoveryInvestors are buying homes at a more rapid pace than ever before, and this time their investments actually make sense.? Most are buying homes below replacement cost, or at prices that allow for a reasonable rental return.

Across the 167 metro areas we analyzed, investor activity rose to 29.6% of all transactions in the first quarter of this year, up from the trough of 23.6% in Q4 2009.? Our research leads us to believe Q2 activity exceeds Q1, and since last quarter, investor activity has already spiked 2%!

Investor activity has returned to the markets where investors got burned the most.? These markets include Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Sacramento, and Riverside (CA).? Some markets are now completely dominated by investors, such as Las Vegas (50% of all activity) and Phoenix (46%).

An Investor-Driven Home Recovery

Small markets are also attractive to investors, especially in inland California (Merced, Modesto, Bakersfield, Vallejo, etc.) and second home buyers are also sensing the bargains, causing huge increases in Naples, The Villages, Tucson and Panama City.

The naysayers will surely point to these facts as a false recovery. While they are technically correct, we are not concerned at all, and are embracing the return of private capital. Most of these investors are paying all cash and buying homes below replacement cost. They are helping the market recover by removing supply at the low end of the market and driving real buyers to higher price points, including new homes. We don?t see a scenario where they dump their homes en masse on the market unless it becomes crystal clear that home prices are headed down again.

We are focused on the potential positive result, which is that rising prices get fence-sitting consumers off the fence. We are seeing this occur in some pockets around the country.

We will continue to monitor investor activity closely. We doubt that most investors will have the discipline to stop investing when the market gets overheated. At that point, we will start calling them speculators. There is a big difference.

High waves pound seawall in Yonabarucho, Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan, Sunday afternoon, Aug. 26, 2012. Residents were being told to stay indoors and warned wind gusts from the strongest typhoon to approach Okinawa in several years could overturn cars and cause waves of up to 12 meters (40 feet) on Sunday. (AP) ? More than 75,000 households lacked power on Monday after a powerful typhoon lashed the southern Japanese island of Okinawa, injuring four people but doing less damage than feared before moving off to sea.

Weather officials had warned that Typhoon Bolaven would be the strongest to hit the region in several years, but its gusts weren't as powerful as predicted.

Disaster authorities reported no major damage as of early Monday aside from the blackouts.

Roughly 75,000 households were without power on Okinawa and the nearby Amami islands as heavy rain and winds continued Monday. Many schools and government offices were closed because of the blackouts. Much of the public transportation system ? including buses, shipping and airlines ? had also not yet been restored, officials said.

The center of the slow-moving storm, the 15th of the season, passed over the island late Sunday and was moving northwest into the East China Sea on Monday. It could affect coastal areas of South Korea by Tuesday, weather officials said.

As the typhoon approached Okinawa on Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said wind speeds near the center of the typhoon were about 180 kilometers per hour (112 miles per hour), with gusts reaching 252 kph (155 mph), possibly equaling or surpassing past records for the area.

But public broadcaster NHK reported that the gusts measured on the island of Amami, north of Okinawa, reached just 140 kph (87 mph).

Okinawa disaster authorities said four people were hurt.

More than half of the 50,000 U.S. troops based in Japan are stationed in Okinawa. At Kadena Air Base, one of the biggest bases on the island, all shops and service facilities were ordered closed and movement around the base was to be kept to a minimum. All entry into the ocean was prohibited.

Bolaven comes on the heels of Typhoon Tembin, which soaked southern Taiwan on Friday, largely sparing populated areas before blowing out to sea again.

Get Serious About Nutrition! - Mia's at Pepperell Square

More and more people are trying to make better choices when it comes to their food. Eating properly leads to a healthier life. Read and learn a few tips that can help you improve your life.

Ground turkey is a healthier substitute for ground beef, although many people consider it to be drier. To moisten up the turkey, try adding some olive oil and diced onions. This will add flavor and the olive oil is a healthy fat. This gives you a very tasty meat dish while reducing the amount of fat you eat.

To make the most of your choice to consume a nutritious diet, it is imperative to learn what constitutes good nutrition. Don?t waste your time just wondering what foods are the best for good nutrition. The science of nutrition has been a priority recently and there are many online websites to keep you informed.

Change the type of milk you drink. Low-fat milks have all the vitamins and minerals of high-fat milks, but far fewer calories. If you switch to milk that is lower in fat content, you body will get the same amount of vitamins and minerals, and it will benefit from the lower calories.

Be wary of foods that claim to be fat-free or contain no trans fats. ?Fat-free? foods may be devoid of fat, but in most cases, they certainly are NOT devoid of refined sugars. Always read your food labels to get the correct information before purchasing these products.

A great rule to remember is to make your plate as colorful as possible when you fill it. The various colors of fruits and vegetables can give you a lot of healthy benefits minus the calories. Every mealtime should include a bright colorful fruit and/or vegetable dish. If the fruit or vegetable has an edible skin, eat that as well, because many nutrients are contained in the skin.

You can now see how important this lifestyle change is for so many people. You will start seeing changes now if you make good use of these tips.

Florida Baptists called to 56 days of prayer prior to Election Day

Florida Baptists called to 56 days of prayer prior to Election Day

Aug 24, 2012
By BARBARA DENMAN
Florida Baptist Convention

JACKSONVILLE (FBC)?In these ?days of urgency? for the people of God and nation, Florida Baptists are being called to 56 Days of Praying ?For His Name? in the time leading up to and beyond election day.?

The consecrated prayer time, set to begin Sept. 16 and continue through Nov. 10, was designed to ask God?s blessings ?for His name, for my neighbor and for our nation,? said Rick Shepherd, strategist for the Florida Baptist Convention?s Prayer and Spiritual Awakening Team.

?God is inviting us to join Him in praying, then going, loving, reaching, teaching, giving and discipling,? Shepherd said. ?He is getting our?

attention in many ways, including the needs and calamities around us, as well as through His Spirit within us, and the Word before us.?

In calling Florida Baptists to prayer, Shepherd said, ?These are days of?urgency, not only in dealing with our circumstances, but in seeking for Jesus Christ to be heard.? While Shepherd sees ?evidence of a hand of judgment,? he said, ?we have not lost hope and God?s hand of mercy is extended.?

On Aug. 1 Shepherd sent a packet of materials to every Florida Baptist pastor that included tools to be used in the prayer effort.

The packet contained an eight-week prayer calendar with instructions on its use and leader notes on how to participate in the emphasis. Each day?of the week, the prayer calendar focuses on categories of glory, purity, authority, family,?security, economy and eternity. Copies of the prayer guide can be made from the electronic?version found at www.flbaptist.org/56DaysofPraying.?

Additional resources and ideas can be located on the emphasis? dedicated website.?

Also was included in the mailing was a resource on ?One Cry,? a nationwide call to prayer for spiritual awakening. The card provided information on how to be involved in the prayer emphasis and secure personal and church-wide resources through www.OneCry.com.

Shepherd suggested that as pastors plan to participate in the statewide prayer effort, they consider involvement in three ways:

?Commit to personal participation by praying each of the 56 days, using the prayer calendar as a resource.

?Encourage congregations to pray for each member personally and lead in an effort to use the calendar in corporate functions.

?Urge church-wide participation in a Day of Prayer by specifically selecting one of the dates and spend that day in consecrated prayer. Congregations willing to make that commitment are encouraged to sign up on the website, www.flbaptist.org/56DaysofPraying to indicate their date of commitment.?

For more information, resources, or to register commitments to 56 Days of Prayer, go to www.flbaptist.org/56daysofPraying.com; or call the Prayer and Spiritual Awakening Team at 800-226-8584, ext. 3098.?

Scrapbooking | The Stay At Homer

I can?t scrapbook. ?I?ve tried. ?I?ve really tried. ?Seriously, I?ve sat at a table with the intent to create a scrapbook and I?ve given it ?a go.? It?s my understanding that the stay at home parent is in charge of managing the family photos and arranging them into fun, memorable, scrapbooks. ?It?s not enough to just look at a bunch of pictures every now and again?.pictures from the picture bin that sits in the ?memory stuff box? that we keep in the only available spot in that one closet. ?No, we need a SCRAPBOOK! ?And with my wife at work, the burden is on me to creatively capture our life history into lovely 12 x 12 pages. ?And I suck at it.

But it just so happens that I have the ultimate answer to those of us who suck at the scrapbooking aspect, but want the scrapbooking aspect! ?HIRE A SCRAPBOOKER!?

Through the bizarrely wonderful journey that is my life, I came to know some amazing, hardcore scrapbookers and stampers. ?One of the first gals I met was a woman named Erika Martin. ?Super cool gal. ?And it was serendipity? ?Fate? ?Good luck? ?Something like that?..Gayle and I fell in love with her work, and so we commissioned her to create a scrapbook of the first year of Noble?s life. ?Here are some of the pages she made! ?UNREAL! I should apologize for the glare in some of the pictures. ?I refuse to take the pages out of the protective sheet?plus I think Gayle might kill me if I tried.

The cover to Noble?s book. I can?t even remember him looking like that!! That?s a baby right there!

This is one of my favorites.

There?s Noble?s personality! Incidentally, this will probably also be his smile at age 80 when his teeth fall out?

Another great one. This right here is the reason we had Erika do these for us. Never in my wildest could I put something this artistic together.

Noble?s first birthday. Erika leaves spaces on some pages for us to journal a memory, or write something of our own?.but we are too scared that we?ll wreck the page, so we haven?t written in them yet!

We basically sent her our jpg files and told her about some page ideas, and some important details about our lives, and she just ran with it! ?I also surprised Gayle by having Erika make a book about Alistair?s first year and gave it to her on our 10th anniversary, back in July. ?MAJOR brownie points achieved. ?LEVEL UP!

Here are some photos of Alistair?s scrapbook! ?UNREAL?AGAIN!

Alistair?s book cover. Keep in mind, I just sent her a bunch of pictures?this cover is 100% her creation, and it?s perfect!

One of my favorite Alistair pages.

The great thing is that I can look at this page and all my memories of being with Alistair at Manhattan Beach come flooding back. This is going to be crucial for me as I start ?losing it? in my old age. I already can?t remember to close the fridge door?.

Erika has fallen on an incredibly difficult situation. ?I was already planning on writing a post about her awesome work, and now it?s coming at a time when she really needs the word out. ?If you are somebody that wants to be able to flip through an artistic, beautiful scrapbook of your family, but you can barely cut a straight line, let alone draw much more than a stick figure (like me), then please check Erika out. ?And you?ll not only be getting something wonderful, but you?ll be?doing something wonderful for a fellow parent in need.

If scrapbooks aren?t your thing, she may have something else crafty that you might like! ?Check out Erika?s etsy shop!

Times like these remind me how fortunate I am. The idea that a friend is out there, possibly about to lose their home, not only saddens me, but it frustrates the hell out of me. ?If I can help her by posting to you all (I also did a little shopping on her etsy site) then I believe I have a duty to do that. ?I hope you take the time to read her story and hopefully peruse her wares.

Here is the post Erika sent out the other day, copied with permission.

I hesitated in putting this out, but we?re stuck. As most of your remember, back at the beginning of this year, we were in danger of losing our house to foreclosure due to David losing hours at work. So many of you rallied around us and bought from my Etsy shop and we were so blessed to be able to make a payment that kept us from having our home loan demanded in full. Since then, it?s still been tight, but we?ve been able to get a payment in each month without going past that dreaded ?Day 60.? Our loan officer has been very understanding and knows that we?re behind and trying our hardest to get caught up.

Unfortunately, being almost 2 months behind is no longer acceptable to the bank. I just got a call from our loan officer and she has her hands tied. Because town taxes and the yearly pay out of our home owner?s insurance are due September 1st, the bank is requiring us to be completely caught up by August 30th. That?s 10 days away! The bank won?t allow us to pay the differnce to make sure the escrow has enough for the taxes and insurance. They are requiring us to have those 2 payments we?ve been behind in by the 30th of this month. Even if we have just one payment in, the bank will still demand our loan in full. We?re stuck between a rock and a hard place.

As most of you know, David had his regular overtime hours cut last fall two months early. We were looking forward to his regular overtime again this summer because we anticipated that we could get caught up and be back on track. The company he works for hired a slew of temporary workers and gave them all the hours and cut the full-time employees (David and his co-workers) out of their overtime at the end of June ? 3 months ahead of time! That regular overtime is something he and his coworkers have had every year except this year. From a business standpoint, I suppose it made sense to his company?s owners, but from an employee?s standpoint, we and the rest of them are all hurting now due to losing that income.

So, here we are, this time with an even bigger obstacle. We have to come up with two month?s worth of mortgage payments in 10 days before the bank calls in our loan and we are put into foreclosure.

Because so many of you came to our rescue back in January, I want you to know that we are not a ?spendthrift? family. I run a pretty tight ship financially and we are very minimalistic. In June and a few weeks ago, I made the trip to Florida to both drop off and pick up my daughter for her missions trip. Our expenses were all paid for by the church we go to (gas money, meals), as well as my grandmother (the flights, our meals, rental car, gas in Florida, and any expenses that we needed when I took Girly and her cousin to Wonderworks). At home, we don?t eat out, I shop at the discount food store, we have a garden, we pinch every penny. Most of you that know me personally know that I?m a very frugal person. Unfortunately, we?ve found ourselves in a bind in spite of all of that.

David works as many hours as his work will give him. I?ve picked up hours at my friends? kennel when they have hours to give me, my tuition for my full-time schooling is completely paid for by grants, and I?ve been setting up at the farmer?s market in town when the weather works in my favor. Some people have asked why I don?t get a job outside the home, but that?s a bit of a catch-22 for us since we have a son with special needs that requires a lot of doctor visits, back and forths to school, and I also help to take care of my elderly grandfather (his appointments, cleaning his house, taking him on errands, helping him with his finances and bills, etc.). Because of this, my schedule has to remain flexible. This is why I try to find ways to make an income in a flexible way ? through working hours at odd times, doing the farmer?s market, and also through my Etsy shop and art classes here in my house. When David caps our his hours at work, it?s up to me to make up the difference and it?s a challenge I gladly face head on.

I?m a hard worker and I am also a fierce mama bear that doesn?t want her family to lose the roof over their head. We live in a very modest house and don?t have a lot of ?toys,? and we?re content to just have our bills paid, food on the table, and a roof over our head. We?re currently doing without hot water at the moment (since the end of July) because our priority right now is to get current with our mortgage. I applied for a grant for utilities and we should be receiving that in the beginning of September. It will allow us to refill the propane tank (yay for hot water again), put heating oil in the tank for the coming winter, and pay up some of our overdue electric bill. Yay for private grants!!

I have a great Etsy shop and would love to create some custom art for you or as a gift for one of your friends, I also have a lot of other fun things on there. I can do special requests, as well. I am willing to work hard for my family to keep our house. I hesitated even putting this up here because so many of you came to our rescue earlier this year, but I knew that if we lost the house, you would all wonder why I didn?t say something earlier.

So, we?ve got 10 days to come up with those two payments. If you could pass my Etsy link on to your friends (you can even share this post if you?d like to give some of our back story), we would appreciate it so much! And if there?s anything you?d like in my Etsy shop or would like to custom order, please let me know and we can work on it. I?ve got new stuff going up on the Etsy shop all week.

And we always appreciate prayers and positive thoughts. :)

Thank you so much for being such amazing friends!

Canada's leaders slammed over drug shortages

Canada needs a national approach to managing its supply of medicines, starting with a mandatory reporting system for drug shortages, two leading professional journals have urged.

Compared with the more decisive action taken by other nations, Canada has demonstrated a lack of preparedness for - and ability to cope with - the recent "unprecedented" levels of shortages, particularly of antiepileptic, chemotherapy, antibiotic and anaesthetic agents, says an editorial published jointly in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) and the Canadian Pharmacists Journal (CPJ).

These shortages result in poorer health, with consequences such as worsening of medical conditions, negative reactions to substitute drugs, cancellation of surgeries and procedures, and increased costs to patients and the health care system, say authors Dr Matthew Standbrook, deputy editor of the CMAJ, and Rosemary Killeen, editor-in-chief of the CPJ.

"This situation will not improve in the foreseeable future without major changes in how Canadian governments - federal, provincial and territorial - respond to it," they warn, and go on to ask: "if governments do not start showing leadership on this issue, who will act in the interest of Canadian patients?"

While Europe and the US require drugmakers to inform governments in advance of possible drug shortages, Canada is relying on industry to establish a voluntary reporting system. But a mandatory reporting system for impending shortages should be created and maintained, so that healthcare stakeholders at all levels have adequate and timely information with which to make decisions, the authors urge.

"Canada cannot cope adequately with a problem of this scope with 14 regional health systems operating independently - federal involvement in this issue is unavailable," they say, and suggest that, with national leadership to manage the issue, Canada could take other steps to minimise the effects of shortages, including:

- expanding the national pharmaceutical stockpile;

- mandating that there must be at least two or more suppliers for essential drugs; and?

- establishing a system to share supplies across the country and to restock quickly from international supplies if there is a shortage.

They also point out that while regulatory authority for drugs belongs to Health Canada, the agency has "only belatedly" started to inform the public about drug shortages and to expedite approval of alternate suppliers of products that have been in short supply.

Moreover, the authors suggest, delays at Health Canada in approving new drugs and production process improvements for existing drugs have likely exacerbated the shortages.

"The people of Canada deserve greater responsiveness and action from their elected officials to safeguard the supply of some of the most critical components of health care delivery," write Dr Standbrook and Ms Killeen.

"It is ridiculous and intolerable that a wealthy, developed nation like Canada cannot reliably provide medicines to its people," they add.

- The "unnecessary" length of Canada's review and approval process for new cancer drugs was strongly criticised last month in a report by the Fraser Institute, a Canadian free-market policy think tank.

Of the 33 oncology drugs slated for market approval between 2003 and 2011, 30 were approved in the US, 26 in the European Union (EU) and just 24 in Canada, it says. And Health Canada took longer to approve every new cancer drug (apart from one) than the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where the median review time was 182 days compared to 356 days in Canada.

Moreover, by the end of March 2012, almost 60% of these 24 approved drugs were not covered under public drug plans in any Canadian province, says the Institute.

(AP) ? The lawyer for a paparazzo charged with recklessly pursuing photos of Justin Bieber says he is challenging the constitutionally of a new law.

Attorney David S. Kestenbaum says it violates the First Amendment and is overly broad. He represents Paul Raef, a celebrity photographer who was charged July 25 with four counts, including reckless driving with the intent to capture pictures for commercial gain, following another vehicle too closely and reckless driving.

A hearing on Kestenbaum's motion is set for Sept. 24. Kestenbaum says Raef has not been booked because he is the first person charged under the 2010 law and police did not recognize it.

The charges stem from a July 6 high-speed freeway pursuit involving Bieber and photographers.

Old School Advertising Is DEAD! | Millionaire Business Articles

?

By Margie Chavez

Evidence of Babylonians using signs over the sides of stores in 3,000 B.C. demonstrates how many years people have been working to spread the word that they have something others would like. The Acta Diurna was the first Roman paper, published in 59 B.C., so you can reasonably assume a commerce-oriented way of life like the Roman Empire and the Republic most likely posted ads in the newspaper publishers of that time.

In 1450, Johannes Gutenberg designed the moveable type printing press, enabling for mass output and distribution of printed promotional advertisements and the far more efficient creation of newspaper publishers. This was the prominent kind of advertising for several 100 years until finally the advent of radio and tv within the last century.

We now have the internet. Cellular phones. Teeny computers with touchscreens.

Because the surge of the world wide net, numerous new techniques for advertising and marketing have popped up. Social websites makes it possible for extensive and substantial networking between folks that would have been, in practice, extremely hard to keep up less than 10 years back. SEO exploded combined with the~combined with~with the ever- popular online search engine market, becoming a profitable enterprise in its own right. Viral online video media confirmed the world-changing potential possibility of videos streamed via the internet, opening up the video promotion business. Smartphones such as apple iphone as well as Androids have even managed to make it possible to stick advertising in to consumers? pockets. Mobile phone marketing is one of the principal way for application designers for cell phones to fund their initiatives.

And so with all these choices?

Which one is better? What?s going to most effectively pass on the message?

Why don?t we conduct a good experiment.

You happen to be riding down the road in your vehicle and hearing a great tune on the stereo. And then it ends and an advertisement plays or the DJ begins speaking about some product or service you may have simply no interest in, that is probably 95% of all the ads you hear over the radio.

What do you do? Change the station possibly. Or turn it lower. Or perhaps put in a CD.

You?re watching television on the sofa soon after supper, taking advantage of your preferred show. Then this seriously obnoxiously deafening commercial starts. Exactly what do you do? Switch the station. Or fast-forward through it due to the fact its recorded on TiVo or internet streaming through Hulu. In some instances, you could even be watching a digital copy of the show right from your pc.

See the point of the experiment yet?

Direct snail mail promotion will get tossed away, hardly ever seen. Mag ads tend to be questionably effective when they are displayed well enough. Yellow pages and phone guides? Who even uses them any longer? They are sent out almost all over the place and typically get piled in to loads to collect dust in a corner in the customer?s home. Or thrown away entirely. That?s ad cash thrown away for all good reasons. Sure, there are some people that use them nonetheless however the overwhelming bulk rely on the online world for their research wants for services and goods of all types.

In the here and now of the electronic era, the way to spread the word is the net.

Facebook and Twitter. Social networking, the single easiest way to spread Mobile marketing and Online video promotion out to the majority of shoppers. Google queries have SEO professionals globally working round the clock to continuously optimise SEO usage to make it more beneficial.

Why is this so?

Another experiment.

You?re browsing on Facebook and see an advertisement for a product which makes you have a good laugh. You click it and find out what it is. Somebody just made money off that click, making the offer an automated return for the organization which posted it, regardless of whether you buy anything at all or not.

Your Twitter dings at you. You look at it and it is your preferred celebrity talking up an awesome product or service they just used. You check it out, clicking on links(that pay people), view a video about another product, and eventually you purchase the original product your celebrity talked about.

That is social media(with a celebrity) interlocked with online video marketing and paid for link marketing.

Lay out where you could evaluate the 2 like that, you see where digital marketing on-line shows obvious benefits above many of the older forms of marketing.

Just to illustrate: the digital distribution service Steam just ended its Annual Summer Sale, which received practically no televised advertising however totally enormous social networking coverage. These Steam sales are so profitable, even with the game titles selling for dirt cheap(and that?s why they are so profitable) that Steam does two or three of them a year while still preserving the most used video gaming service on earth and its numerous multiplayer gamers. Seems much more cost-effective that placing an advertisement within the newspaper that will get thrown away.

Understand the bottom line here? Digital marketing isn?t the way of the foreseeable future any more.

It is the method of the now.

Tropical Storm Isaac threatens GOP convention

MIAMI - Tropical Storm Isaac spun over the Caribbean Sea and could become a hurricane on Thursday as it moves on a track that would put it off the coast of Florida on Monday, the opening day of the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

As the center of Isaac moved away from the Leeward Islands, the storm prompted hurricane warnings in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Isaac may also threaten U.S. energy interests in the Gulf of Mexico, weather experts said. It was centered about 265 miles (425 km) southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, early on Thursday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Isaac had top sustained winds of 45 miles per hour (75 kph), and could strengthen into a hurricane late on Thursday or Friday as it approaches the coast of Hispaniola, the island shared by the Dominican Republic and flood-prone Haiti, t he Miami-based center said.

Computer forecast models showed the storm moving west-northwest across the island on Friday, posing a severe risk of mudslides on Haiti?s denuded hillsides.

Isaac was projected to weaken to a tropical storm over Haiti and then pass over Cuba before strengthening into a hurricane in the Florida Straits between Cuba and Florida. Its exact path after that remained uncertain.

Some computer models showed Isaac shifting slightly to the west and eventually moving parallel to Florida?s western coastline. Others forecast the storm to make landfall in South Florida and then move inland.

At the Guantanamo Bay U.S. Naval Base in southeast Cuba on Wednesday, authorities said Isaac forced the postponement of pretrial hearings that were to begin on Thursday for five prisoners accused of plotting the Sept. 11 attacks.

The U.S. military was preparing flights to evacuate the lawyers, paralegals, interpreters, journalists, rights monitors and family members of 9/11 victims who had traveled to the base for the hearings.

REPUBLICAN CONVENTION

Forecasters said it was too soon to gauge Isaac?s potential impact on Tampa on Florida?s Gulf Coast, where the Republican National Convention is to run from Monday through Thursday.

But Lixion Avila, a senior hurricane specialist at the hurricane center, suggested it would be foolish for anyone to think Tampa - where Republicans will nominate Mitt Romney as their presidential candidate - was out of harm?s way.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, a Democrat, said he was not really worried about Isaac, however.

?We?re watching it. We?re tracking it. I think we?re going to be OK but we?ll be prepared in the event it heads this way,? Buckhorn told CNN on Wednesday.

?We hope it moves further away from us, but if it doesn?t it?s still going to be a great convention,? he said.

Hurricane expert Jeff Masters of private forecaster Weather Underground said Tampa had a 9 percent chance of getting hit with tropical storm-force winds for a 24-hour period ending on the morning the Republican convention kicks off. But that could make the storm a non-event in terms of the convention itself.

?I put the odds of an evacuation occurring during the convention in the current situation at 3 percent,? Masters said in his blog on the weatherunderground.com website.

ORANGE JUICE PRICE JUMP

Florida has not been hit by a major hurricane since 2005 and forecasts showed Isaac was not expected to strengthen beyond a weak Category 1, with top sustained wind speeds of about 80 mph (129 kph).

Analysts at Weather Insight, a Thomson Reuters company, said Isaac has a 50 percent probability of moving into the heart of the Gulf of Mexico oil and gas production region.

The threat to Florida triggered a nearly 6 percent jump in orange juice prices on Wednesday as they surged to a six-week high in trading in New York.

Florida produces more than 75 percent of the U.S. orange crop and accounts for about 40 percent of the world?s orange juice supply, making it key to volatility in orange juice futures trading.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, and August has traditionally been an active month. Friday is the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, which caused widespread damage when it came barreling ashore south of Miami on Aug. 24, 1992.

On Thursday, Isaac is expected to pass just south of Puerto Rico. As the storm approached, Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuno declared a state of emergency, canceled classes, closed government agencies and activated the National Guard.

The government also froze prices on basic necessities such as food, batteries and other supplies and prepared emergency shelters at schools and other facilities.

Lurking behind Isaac, the hurricane center said another tropical depression formed over the eastern tropical Atlantic on Wednesday.

Located about 1045 miles (1,685 km) west of the Cape Verde Islands, it was packing winds of 35 mph (56 kph) and was expected to become a tropical storm on Thursday. Forecasts predicted it will eventually veer toward the open Atlantic and away from the Caribbean.

Mars rover Curiosity begins driving at Bradbury landing

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has begun driving from its landing site, which scientists announced today they have named for the late author Ray Bradbury.

Making its first movement on the Martian surface, Curiosity's drive combined forward, turn and reverse segments. This placed the rover roughly 20 feet (6 meters) from the spot where it landed 16 days ago.

NASA has approved the Curiosity science team's choice to name the landing ground for the influential author who was born 92 years ago today and died this year. The location where Curiosity touched down is now called Bradbury Landing.

"This was not a difficult choice for the science team," said Michael Meyer, NASA program scientist for Curiosity. "Many of us and millions of other readers were inspired in our lives by stories Ray Bradbury wrote to dream of the possibility of life on Mars."

Today's drive confirmed the health of Curiosity's mobility system and produced the rover's first wheel tracks on Mars, documented in images taken after the drive. During a news conference today at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., the mission's lead rover driver, Matt Heverly, showed an animation derived from visualization software used for planning the first drive.

"We have a fully functioning mobility system with lots of amazing exploration ahead," Heverly said.

Curiosity will spend several more days of working beside Bradbury Landing, performing instrument checks and studying the surroundings, before embarking toward its first driving destination approximately 1,300 feet (400 meters) to the east-southeast.

"Curiosity is a much more complex vehicle than earlier Mars rovers. The testing and characterization activities during the initial weeks of the mission lay important groundwork for operating our precious national resource with appropriate care," said Curiosity Project Manager Pete Theisinger of JPL. "Sixteen days in, we are making excellent progress."

The science team has begun pointing instruments on the rover's mast for investigating specific targets of interest near and far. The Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument used a laser and spectrometers this week to examine the composition of rocks exposed when the spacecraft's landing engines blew away several inches of overlying material.

The instrument's principal investigator, Roger Weins of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, reported that measurements made on the rocks in this scoured-out feature called Goulburn suggest a basaltic composition. "These may be pieces of basalt within a sedimentary deposit," Weins said.

Curiosity began a two-year prime mission on Mars when the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft delivered the car-size rover to its landing target inside Gale Crater on Aug. 5 PDT (Aug. 6 EDT). The mission will use 10 science instruments on the rover to assess whether the area has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

In a career spanning more than 70 years, Ray Bradbury inspired generations of readers to dream, think and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and nearly to 50 books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time.

His groundbreaking works include "Fahrenheit 451," "The Martian Chronicles," "The Illustrated Man," "Dandelion Wine," and "Something Wicked This Way Comes." He wrote the screenplay for John Huston's classic film adaptation of "Moby Dick," and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted 65 of his stories for television's "The Ray Bradbury Theater," and won an Emmy for his teleplay of "The Halloween Tree."

JPL manages the Mars Science Laboratory/Curiosity for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The rover was designed, developed and assembled at JPL.
