In order to become a qualified lifeguard you need to enroll on a course and be awarded with the correct certificates. In order to pass the test and cope with the endurance of the job you will need to be an excellent swimmer. You should also make sure you are fit and strong to cope with the duties of this position.

Once you qualify you will be awarded with a lifeguard certificate and then you can begin your job hunt. Many camps offer a great way to earn money between studying. The life is high pressured. You will be responsible of making sure all your swimmers are safe and do not cause any danger to themselves or others in the pool. It can be mentally challenging and dangerous as you have to have a constant watch on the entire area, staying alert and ready to act in the case of an emergency.

Beach work is obviously more stressful since the conditions depend on the sea, weather and wildlife. The hours of work are less, since you will only be needed to work during daylight hours. Depending on the location you may also only be offered seasonal work.

If you choose to work in a swimming center or private gym then the hours are more demanding and are mostly worked in shift patterns. You may be asked to work from around six am up to 10 pm at night. As swimming is a leisure activity the centers will be open during all holidays besides Christmas day.

A great way into lifeguarding is to gain an assistant job in your local leisure centre. You can get your certificate paid for if you pass and be given a job as soon as you qualify. You can then go on to training for leisure management positions and undertake further training on the job.

Visit your local pool for advice in your area. You must be at least sixteen to become employed in this career if you want to work in a swimming area. Beaches insist that you are at least eighteen.
