How to restore your address book after Facebook messed it up

Recently, Facebook changed everyone's email to an @facebook.com address. Even if you fixed the problem, you may find that Facebook changed all of the contacts in your phone, too. Here's how to fix it.

A lot of us sync our Facebook accounts with our address books on our smartphones, so we always have up-to-date phone numbers, email addresses, and pictures for all of our friends. However, with Facebook changing everyone's email to @facebook.com last week, blogger Rachel Luxemburg (and a lot of other people) found that those changes were synced down to their phone?meaning they don't have any of their friends' actual email addresses anymore. Just the facebook.com ones.

None of us at Lifehacker have noticed this problem, but we do have a few ideas about how to fix it. In fact, this will fix any similar problem you have where your contacts get messed up. Here's what you need to do.

Step one: Restore your contacts to a previous state
Some services?particularly Google?regularly back up your contacts so if something goes wrong, you can restore them. And, since nearly all Android users sync their contacts with Google?as well as many iPhone users?this is a good way to fix the contacts on your phone. To do so, just follow these instructions:

1. Before you do anything else, go to your phone and turn off Facebook syncing for your contact list. On Android, this is in the Facebook app under Settings > Sync Contacts. Just set it to "Don't Sync". On the iPhone, go to the Facebook app, click the menu button, scroll down to "Friends", then hit the share button in the upper right-hand corner. Tap "Sync Contacts" and turn syncing off. Note that depending on your platform, you may have a "Remove Facebook Data" button on the contact syncing screen?tapping this will also turn off syncing.
2. Go to your Gmail inbox, and click on the "Gmail" label under the Google logo. Go to Contacts. Remember, this trick only works if you were syncing your phone with your Google contacts.
3. Click the "More" button and go to "Restore Contacts". We don't know exactly when the Facebook change happened, but you'll probably want to set it to restore your contacts from a day before June 22, 2012, so set it to whatever you need to go back that far.
4. Click the Restore button. When it finishes, you should hopefully find that all of your contacts' correct email addresses have been restored! As long as you don't sync with Facebook again, they should stay that way.

If you don't sync your contacts with Google, check to see if your desktop address book has any alternatives. For example, if you're on a Mac and you back it up with Time Machine, you can just open up Address Book, invoke Time Machine from the menu bar, then restore it to a date before the Facebook ridiculousness happened. Then when you re-sync your iPhone, you should be good to go. Check your address book app's documentation for more info on whether it has an automatic backup feature.

Step two: Remind your friends to change their Facebook profile
If you can't restore your address book?or if you still want to be able to sync your Facebook?the only thing you can do is get all your friends to change their Facebook profile back to the way it was. That way, Facebook will sync their correct email address back to your phone. We've shown you how to do this before, so if you haven't already, spread the word to all your friends and family so they don't run into problems later on.

We couldn't test these instructions ourselves, because none of us have experienced the issue, but this should help you get your contacts back to the way they were (or at least closer). If you'ved this issue, let us know how these instructions work for you in the comments below.

Reuters speculates that the 33-year-old actress may be entitled to $3 million for each year she was married to Cruise. GAUHATI, India (AP) ? The worst monsoon floods in a decade to hit a remote northeastern Indian state have killed more than 80 people and forced around 2 million to leave their homes.

Nearly half a million people are living in relief camps that have been set up across Assam state, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told journalists Monday in Gauhati, Assam's capital. The rest of the 2 million displaced are living with relatives or sheltering under tarpaulin sheets.

Assam officials say 81 people have been killed over the past four days. Most were swept away when the mighty Brahmaputra River overflowed and flooded villages. Sixteen people were buried in landslides triggered by the rains.

At least 11 people were missing in six districts, the state disaster management agency said.

Air force helicopters were dropping food packets and drinking water to marooned people, Singh said after surveying the flood-hit districts.

Army soldiers used boats to rescue villagers from rooftops of flooded homes.

Teams of doctors have opened health clinics in the 770 relief camps that had been set up across Assam, one of India's main tea-growing states. The hilly tea growing areas have not been affected, but lower rice fields have been washed away.

Thousands of cattle have perished after being swept away by the raging water or getting stuck in the mud. The stench of rotting animal carcasses was adding to the woes of the people in tents at the relief camps, officials said.

In the worst-hit Dhemaji district, raging waters of the Brahmaputra River swept away entire villages.

Officials said the entire Majuli island, one of the world's largest river islands, was awash as the Brahmaputra rose above the danger level.

"This is one of the worst floods to hit Assam," Singh said. He announced the national government would give immediate assistance of 5 billion rupees ($90 million) to the state.

Railway workers were working round the clock to restore train services disrupted after railway tracks became submerged. "Restoration of the railway line is a priority," Singh said.

The situation was expected to improve over the next few days as the rain was tapering off and water was beginning to recede.

Monsoon floods hit Assam, with a population of 26 million people, almost every year, with heavy rains swelling the Brahmaputra and its innumerable tributaries that crisscross the state.

Short visits home allowed after Colorado wildfires

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? People who fled the most destructive fire in Colorado's history are being allowed temporary visits to the most devastated neighborhoods, and many will find that their homes were among the nearly 350 burned to the ground.

About 10,000 people remain evacuated, down from more than 30,000 at the peak of the Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado Springs.

On Sunday people whose homes were burned will be allowed to tour the affected areas. Authorities said some residences would be cordoned off with police tape, and people would not be allowed beyond that point.

The home of Janine Herbertson and her 15-year-old daughter, Tessa Konik, remained unburned amid 150 others that were destroyed, said Herbertson as they ate lunch Saturday outside a Red Cross shelter.

Even so, "I'm afraid to go on the tour tomorrow and see our neighborhood in ruins," she said.

The 26-square-mile fire was 45 percent contained late Saturday night. It was one of many burning across the West, including eight in Utah and a fast-growing blaze in Montana that forced residents in several small communities to leave.

On Saturday, firefighting crews were keeping a wary eye on weather that was becoming warmer and drier.

"The weather is making progress in a bad direction. Hotter, drier, with a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Winds will shift from one direction to another," said Incident Commander Rich Harvey.

About 1,200 personnel and six helicopters were fighting the Waldo Canyon fire, and authorities said they were confident they had built good fire lines in many areas to stop flames from spreading.

"Crews made progress all around the fire,'" said Harvey, who was cautiously optimistic. "The fire potential is still very, very high. It's extreme and explosive."

Two bodies were found in the ruins of one house, one of almost 350 destroyed in this city 60 miles south of Denver. The victims' names haven't been released. Police Chief Pete Carey said Saturday afternoon the approximately 10 people who had been unaccounted for had now been located.

Police did not expect to discover other victims in the rubble.

More than 150 National Guard soldiers and airmen helped Colorado Springs police staff roadblocks and patrol streets. Carey said Saturday the presence of military personnel will allow his department to resume normal police work in the rest of the city.

Evacuees Saturday filtered back into an unscathed neighborhood of winding streets and split-level homes within an easy walk of the burned area.

High school counselor Pat Allen and her husband, Vic Miller, were all smiles less than five minutes after returning to their tri-level home on a quiet cul-de-sac.

"I'm just wanting to kiss the house, dance with the neighbors", Allen said.

Their house didn't smell of smoke. Their electricity was out for two or three days but the popsicles in their freezer didn't melt, she said.

Around the corner, retiree Nina Apsey wandered in search of eight small, solar-powered lights that somebody had taken from her yard during the evacuation.

"I'm assuming it was vandalism," she said.

Prized possessions still piled into the Hyundai sport-utility vehicle in her garage included caribou antlers and antelope and deer head mounts. As flames bore down, she'd also taken a small ceramic cowboy statue. Her late husband taught her how to hunt. He resembled the cowboy, she said.

She wasn't too perturbed about her missing lights because nothing else was touched.

"If that's the worst that happened to me, I'm blessed," she said.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire that broke out on June 23, and which so far has cost $8.8 million to battle. Dangerous conditions had kept them from beginning their inquiry.

Among the fires elsewhere in the West:

? Utah: Residents were sifting through the ashes of more than 50 houses destroyed by a central Utah wildfire. Homeowners were allowed to return Saturday to Indianola along Utah's scenic Route 89. In all, eight wildfires are burning across Utah.

? Montana: Authorities in eastern Montana ordered the evacuation of several communities Saturday as the Ash Creek Complex fires, which has burned more than 70 homes this week, consumed another 72 square miles. The blaze grew to 244 square miles overnight.

? Wyoming: A wind-driven wildfire in a sparsely populated area of southeastern Wyoming exploded from eight square miles to nearly 58 square miles in a single day, and an unknown number of structures have burned. About 200 structures were considered threatened.

? Idaho: A fast-moving 1,000-acre wildfire in eastern Idaho that destroyed 66 homes and 29 outbuildings was expected to be contained Saturday. Some 1,000 residents were evacuated; it was unclear when they would be allowed back.

? Colorado: The last evacuees from the High Park Fire in northern Colorado have been allowed to return home as crews get closer to full containment. The 136-square-mile fire killed one resident and destroyed 259 houses, a state record until the fire near Colorado Springs destroyed 346 homes. In western Colorado, the 18-square-mile Pine Ridge Fire was 10 percent contained.
