Workshop on using writing & speaking to teach course content set ...

On Friday, August 3^rd, the University Writing Center will offer a new faculty workshop entitled ?Masters of the Univers(ity): Using writing & speaking to help students master course content.? The event, presented by UWC Executive Director Valerie Balester and UWC Associate Director Candace Schaefer, will run from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. in Room 204E of Evans Library.

The University?s first undergraduate learning outcome states that TAMU students should ?Master the depth of knowledge required for a degree.? Specifically, students are expected to articulate, synthesize, and apply disciplinary theory and knowledge.

In this workshop, we will explore high-impact practices?writing and speaking in the disciplines?which can meet this goal. Together we?ll analyze documents/performances across the disciplines and learn how to integrate good composing practices into a discipline-specific class.? We?ll also discuss using written and oral reflection as a way to reinforce and assess learning.

The event is free and open to all instructors and lunch will be provided. Registration is required.

Is today's Democratic primary the last hurrah for Rep. Charles Rangel?

Charles Rangel has a storied past in Harlem and the US House of Representatives, where he has served 21 terms. But ethics violations, censure, and redistricting could take a toll in Tuesday's primary.

The 21-term congressman will find out Tuesday after voters go to the polls in northern Manhattan, Harlem, and a small part of the Bronx to select who will be on the Democratic ticket in November ? practically a guarantee of election in New York's 13th Congressional District.

In the past, this wouldn?t even be an issue. Mr. Rangel, a decorated Korean War veteran who helped funnel vast federal dollars toward the revitalization of his district, usually had no trouble fending off challengers. He was always well versed on the issues, and he had a gravelly voice that resonated with voters. Many 50-year-olds still remember when he handed out candy to them.

But times have changed.

The boundaries of Rangel?s district have been changed ? giving it a much larger proportion of Hispanic voters. Rangel himself, once a vigorous campaigner, has slowed down. And Rangel no longer has the clout he used to have when he ran the powerful House Ways & Means Committee, which sets tax policy and writes bills affecting Social Security, Medicare, and other entitlement programs.

Nevertheless, he remains a force.

Last Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) of New York gave Rangel his endorsement, on the basis of the many years he has represented the district.

?The endorsement suggests he still has some clout,? says Lee Miringoff, director of polling at the Marist Institute of Public Opinion in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. ?Cuomo provides some important credentialization.?

Rangel also showed he still has the political skill to minimize setbacks when he commented to the television cameras last Friday about The New York Times endorsement of Clyde Williams, a former aid to President Bill Clinton: ?Just tell me how the editorial board of The New York Times could say that Clyde Williams would make a better representative of my district, my city, my country,? he intoned, emphasizing the word ?my? each time.

Nevertheless, Rangel will need all the help he can get. In December 2010, he was censured for 11 congressional ethics violations, including failing to pay taxes on a property he owned and improperly soliciting millions of dollars of corporate donations for the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at the City College of New York.

The New York legislature has also redistricted Rangel?s turf, resulting in many more Hispanic voters than African-Americans. As a result, Rangel?s main opponent is Adriano Espaillat, a Dominican-American.

Legal Mess for Goldman Continues - Zacks.com

According to Reuters, the federal judge in New York rescinded the bid filed by The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS - Analyst Report) regarding the dismissal of a lawsuit charged against the bank, accusing it of selling risky debts via misleading statements. The U.S. District Judge, Paul Crotty, has ordered the plaintiffs to pursue the proceedings over their claims against Goldman relating to the offering of collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) stating "Goldman's arguments in this respect are Orwellian?.

CDOs typically repackage bonds and other assets into new securities. These are not traded on a public exchange, allowing firms like Goldman to generate fees through brokering deals between buyers and sellers. However, CDOs have performed miserably since these were invested in securities comprising sub-prime mortgages, which are known to have larger-than-average risk of defaulting in the market. Eventually, the market downturn ruined the investment banker?s expectations, resulting in huge losses for the common investors.

The aforesaid lawsuit has been filed by the shareholders of the company in Manhattan federal court. They claimed that Goldman concealed the fact of betting against its clients by taking short positions in four CDO transactions, which were sold to the investors. Institutional investors, such as the Arkansas Teacher Retirement System, the Plumbers and Pipefitters National Pension Fund and the West Virginia Investment Management Board are also among the plaintiffs.

All these plaintiffs alleged that Goldman?s act of concealing facts at the time of entering such transactions led to inflated stock prices. Therefore, investors faced losses when the lawsuits were filed against Goldman relating to these transactions, which led to a fall in its share price.

The complaints claimed that Goldman deceptively sold the sub-prime mortgage-linked securities that gradually failed. In addition to that, it misrepresented the value of instruments by providing materially misleading statements.

Among the four transactions involved in the lawsuit, the first one was the Securities and Exchange Commission?s (SEC) charges against the company accusing it of misleading investors by misrepresenting facts in its mortgage-backed securities of over $1 billion. The SEC's complaint accused the investment bank of creating a CDO called Abacus 2007-AC1, which was made up of mortgage-backed securities.

Goldman was also charged by the SEC in the U.S. for misstating facts and selling bad quality sub-prime investments to its customers in 2006, without disclosing the risk factors and the vital role of Paulson & Co., a prime hedge fund, in the portfolio selection process. Therefore, Goldman reached a settlement of $550 million in July 2010 with SEC.

The other three transactions included the Hudson CDO in 2006, the Anderson CDO in 2007, and Timberwolf I hybrid CDO-squared transaction in 2007. In all these transactions, Goldman was blamed for making billions by selling poor quality assets to clients while short selling those securities.

Moreover, claims against individual defendants, such as the chief executive officer Lloyd Blankfein; the chief financial officer David Viniar and chief operating officer Gary Cohn, were also not dismissed by the federal judge.

The continuously increasing number of lawsuits is sure to dent Goldman?s reputation and its financials. However, investors, who have lost their hard-earned money in such investments, should feel relieved.

Among other banks, Citigroup Inc. (C - Analyst Report), JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM - Analyst Report), HSBC Holdings Plc (HBC - Analyst Report) and M&T Bank Corp. (MTB - Analyst Report) have also been legally accused for distorting documents related to mortgage-backed securities and other losses in 2011.

Goldman currently retains a Zacks #3 Rank, which translates into a short-term Hold rating. Considering the fundamentals, we also maintain a long term ?Neutral? recommendation on the stock.

Well, I dont know why I haven't heard of this site before but I am here now and ready to get started. This is not my first time RPing but my first time on this site. I really enjoy the 1X1's and just about anything but the vampire/school/fangirl type stuff. This simple solution can break up clogs caused by everything from hair to soap scum.

Don?t use drain cleaners constantly. The chemicals that these cleaners are made up of are corrosive, and will damage the pipes in your house if you overuse them. Especially in cases where you have a drain that clogs repeatedly, getting a professional plumber in to examine the situation may be your best option.

Do not use a chemical drain opener when you are attempting to unclog your drains. These chemicals can open your drain but they also may hurt you if you get them on your skin. If you plan on using chemicals, then wear adequate protection such as long sleeved shirts and gloves.

If you get your water from a well and orange or pink stains appear in your sink or tub, then you can be sure that the culprit is iron in your water. A water softener will take care of the issue. This can either be done by yourself, or you can hire a professional to come and take care of.

Avoid using harsh abrasive chemicals to clean your fiberglass sinks, bathtubs, toilets and drains. Soaps like dish and laundry detergents are gentler alternatives. These cleaning agents won?t scratch or damage your fiberglass like harsher abrasive cleaners could, and they are also much gentler on your plumbing system.

A lot of people do not know what to do about their plumbing issues so they pay a plumber big bucks! If you own your own home, you owe it to yoruself and your wallet to learn enough about plumbing basics to at least understand what a plumber is doing and why.
