Comments of the Week: Fish Tacos and Apple Porn

Listen up, gringos. It?s time for your prizes. We were truly blessed by the news that a man in Tennessee was suing Apple because big booties, y?all, that?s what life?s all about, but not as blessed as the lovely ChinoMoreno, who?rather than see her lifestyle disastrously changed by pornography?saw her romantic life transform overnight:

ChinoMoreno:?I?m glad that I accidentally viewed porn for it was there that I learned that chicks LOVE anal. Now I have tons of suitors, I got a raise at work and I have no children.

A scholar if there ever was one, that Chino. We wish you the best, but we must move on to the rest.

This next one is a personal favorite so I?m pretty disappointed in you nerds for not nominating it. From Vince?s coverage of Riff Raff?s legal expertise:

Stinky Pete:?Rumor has it Franco has made a counter-offer of Neill Blomkamp?s cell phone number and five minutes staring in silence at Maria Abramovic?s baggy cans.

Very insensitive of you to forget the diacritic (also her name is Marina), but I laughed at ?baggy cans? and congratulated myself for recognizing the reference in the first place. In reality her cans are prettay perkay, befitting her intellectual grace and attraction to hip hop. My apologies to those of you who didn?t get my text, I was too busy segueing into the FilmDrunk song of the Summer: Tay Allyn?s ?Mass Text.? The video had you all pretty excited, inevitably inspiring comparisons of the young(?) starlet(?) to the belles you see in them nude internet movies.

A Cup:?She looks like a 31 yr old pornstar playing a barely legal teen. Like I always say to my computer screen, I?ll play along, but we both know the truth.

It?s funny because it?s true, too true,?like a toddler chewing through an Isuzu?seatbelt off Central Avenue?while mommy?s left you?to film a quick scene but?she?ll be back, won?t you mommy, won?t you? Too true. That?s my spoken word porn poem, and I apologize.

This week?s Comment of the Week belongs to Otto Man, for his heroic work in the thread for Nick Cave?s script for Gladiator 2 a.k.a.?Christ Killer:

Otto Man:?If you?d told me that a famously belligerent Australian actor had commissioned a script called ?Christ Killer,? this is not the story I would?ve imagined.

Congratulations, Otto. Since the debate resulted in a tie (not to mention John Wayne In a Devo Hat scuffed my stepmom?s new linoleum), you are now granted the final word on the edibility of carrots.

To the rest: remember to keep your wits about you, and nominate your favorite comments of the week in the comments section of this very thread. For next week, the winner will receive a poorly photoshopped scene of their choosing (estimated cash value: $250,000). Scene description limited to 140 characters.

Handstand pushups progression program for CrossFit - Fitness ...

    handstand push up

    Practicing my handstand walking.

This is the third article is a series for developing bodyweight movement capacity for CrosFit. This article outlines a handstand pushups progression. The order of this series is as follows:

In this post I?ll outline a framework for progressing through the stages of handstand push up development for the purposes of CrossFit. The phases will start with not being able to get into a handtand against the wall or push up to being able to doing strict handstand push ups, Diane unbroken (21-15-9 HSPU and DL?s), and being proficient at high rep kipping handstand push ups ? which for many CrossFitters (especially women) kipping is a necessary?skill to be proficient at in order to be competitive at the open and regionals.

Within CrossFit the four foundational gymnastic oriented movements that are tested the most are pull ups, ring dips, HSPU?s, and MU?s. Within that there there is a high correlation in performance between the pull ups, ring dips, and muscle ups. The handstand push up?has carryover capacity from the aforementioned triplet but needs to be addressed individually more-so than the others and as such this progression will stand apart in many respects from the development of the other skills. Furthermore, the progressions for handstand push ups have a higher degree of difficulty in terms of technique and body position in comparison to the pull ups and ring dips and for that reason the last post in this series will have video/pictures of each progression to help you progress more efficiently and safely throughout the phases.

Phase 1 ? Prerequisite Handstand push up?specific work

Current ability: Less than 10 standard push ups.

    Goal: 10 standard push ups

Notes: There are tons of ways to being able to develop your push ups but here is a relatively simple yet effective method. There are two phases of a push up progression. The first phase is when you can?t do a push up yet. During this phase your goal is to do sets of 12-15 at the most difficult progression you are able to do (see below for progressions). Once you are getting past 15 reps then move to the next difficulty level. The second phase is when you can do 1-10 standard push ups. During this phase you?ll still be doing a 3?12-15 at a easier progression but also rotate through the following rep schemes to help you get to 10 unbroken quicker.

Phase 1 - prerequisite stage for HSPU
    1 2 3
3-58reps EMOM for 10 minutes. If you do more than 8 reps than move to a more difficult progression. If you get to the point where you can't do 3 when the minute comes up then move to one of the easier progressions for the remainder of minute intervals As many as possible in 3 minutes. Move up :15 each time until you reach 5 minutes or move to phase 2 Accumulate 100 reps throughout the day. Do them at work. The bank. Kitchen. Bedroom. ect. Do not do them all at the gym.
Push Up Progression ? Ordered by difficultly level

There are 10 push up variations. Every other day you will do 3 sets of 12-15 with 3 minutes rest at whichever progression you?re at.

    1. Wall push up ? vary body angle to make more/less difficult
    2. Incline push up on 30? box?- vary body angle to make more/less difficult
    3. Incline push up on 24? box or bench?- vary body angle to make more/less difficult
    4. Knee Push up with 3 ab mats under chest
    5. Knee Push up with 2 ab mats under chest
    6. Knee Push up with 1 ab mat under chest
    7. Standard knee push ups
    8. Standard push up on the way down, knee push up on the way up. Switch to 4?8-12 rep scheme for this progression.
    9. Standard push ups 1 on the minute for 10 minutes. Work your way up to 3 on the minute for 10 minutes.
    10. Standard push ups 3 sets of max reps with 3 minutes rest between sets. Once you can do 10 push ups on the first set you are all set to start phase 1 for HSPU?s.

    ?

    Phase 2

Current ability: 10 standard push ups. If you are not able to do 10 push ups yet, scroll to the bottom of this article for a simple push up progression.

Goal: Comfortably kick up into a handstand against the wall, hold position with tight abs and no arch in lower back for 20 seconds, and comfortably come back down.

Notes: If you cannot touch your toes with straight legs then your encouraged to do hamstring stretches daily till you can.

How to: The progressions for phase 1 does not require a lot of time to recover. You can go through phase 1 workouts 4-5 times a week.

Tips: Once you are able to get into a handstand position against the wall you can get through phase 1 quickly (7-21 days) by practicing handstand holds throughout the day. Since this is a isometric contraction in a stable locked out overhead position the risk of doing too much on your shoulder musculature system is fairly small. The risk from this movement will come from a sudden increase volume in flexion on your wrists which may cause wrist pain. If your wrists begin to hurt or swell then ice them (20-on-20-off 3 times) and take 3-7 days off from handstand training.

    Phase 2 HSPU template
    Day 1 Day 2 Day 3
10 walkouts getting your hands as close to your feet as possible (Video. Go to 2:50) 10 Incline inversions with highest box possible (Video. Go to 2:17) 10 minutes practice of wall climbs to handstand facing the wall. Try to get as close to the wall as possible.
Practice light as a feather drill Practice kicking up to a handstand against a wall safely and holding handstand position against a wall Practice kicking up to a handstand against a wall safely and holding handstand position against a wall
Drills for learning stable body position

I couldn?t find videos for these two drills to help learn to be stable in the lumbar and shoulder joints. I?ll include video?s for these in the last post of the series.

    • Light as a feather
    • Standing shoulder arch

    ?

    Phase 3

Current ability: Comfortably kick up into a handstand against the wall, hold position with tight abs and no arch in lower back for 20 seconds, and comfortably come back down.

Goal: 1 strict handstand push up.

    Objective: Develop overhead pressing strength.

How to: Rotate days 1-4 until you are able to do a strict HSPU.

    Phase 3 HSPU template
    Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4
General Volume Specific General Volume Specific
Accumulate 20 knee on box handstand push ups. Go up 5/week till you are at 40. Each week make it a little more difficult by using a higher box or getting chest closer to box 10?1. Go up 1 rep a week till you move to the next phase. 3 sets of 4 elevated pushups. Once you can do all 12 reps at a certain height move up 3-6 inches 10?1. Go up 1 rep a week till you move to the next phase.
2 sets of 8-12 pike push ups
    Negative HSPU progression

The negative HSPU will be a staple in phases 2-5. It is performed by getting into the handstand position and lowering your self at a 3-4 second pace. Notice I said lower and not drop! The purpose is to move through this range of motion controlled, and not just moving through the range of motion for the sake of checking it off in your note book. Do them right and take your time. It should go with out saying but as you move into using a deficit the time will increase as the ROM increases. Furthermore, while performing this movement there is a propensity for most to accelerate as you get closer to the end range of the movement. Your singular goal is to fight that propensity and gravity so to try and keep the same pace throughout the entire movement on the way down. Once your head is on the ground or ad mat you can just come out of it.

    1. 3 ab mats
    2. 2 ab mats
    3. 1 ab mat
    4. the ground
    5. 2? deficit on box with ab mats in-between.

    7. 6? deficit on box with ab mats in-between.
    8. 8? deficit on box with ab mats in-between.
    9. Shoulder touches box

    ?

    Phase 4

    Current ability: 1 strict HSPU.

Goal:?3?strict HSPU and 10 kipping HSPU

How to:Rotate days 1-3 until you are able to reach phase 4 goals.

    ?

    Phase 4 HSPU template

Add :30/week till you get to 5 minutes. Each week the goal is to get more reps than the last. 1 strict HSPU EMOM (Every Minute On the Minute) for 10 minutes. As you get better feel free to add reps.

    ?

    Phase 5

Current ability:??3?strict HSPU and 10 kipping HSPU

Goal: 6 strict HSPU and 20 kipping HSPU

How to: Rotate days 1-4 until you are able to reach phase 5 goals.

Goal: 10-20 strict HSPU, 30-50 kipping HSPU, and full ROM HSPU on 18? boxes with shoulders touching. Develop capacity to do kipping HSPU while fatigued.

(AP) ? The European Union has declared the military wing of Lebanese party Hezbollah a terrorist group.

A French diplomat says that the Monday decision by the EU's 28 foreign ministers was reached unanimously. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The Iranian-backed group plays a pivotal role in Lebanese politics, dominating the government since 2011, and has since sent its members to bolster Syria's President Bashar Assad forces in their assault of rebel-held areas.

Conflicting Accounts of Basis for Israel-PA Talks Emerge

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry meets with PA President Abbas in May 2013. Photo: State Department.

Times of Israel ? Amid conflicting accounts of the basis on which Israel and the Palestinians are set to renew negotiations, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday night hailed the resumption of the talks, announced Friday by Secretary of State John Kerry, as fulfilling Israel?s ?vital strategic interests.?

Israeli ministers said the government had held firm to its conditions for resuming the negotiations, while Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas had given ground. According to the ministers, the talks would resume without Israel agreeing to a settlement freeze, without Israel agreeing to negotiations for a Palestinian state on the basis of the pre-1967 lines, and without there first being a release of longtime Palestinian prisoners. Israel would release Palestinian prisoners, with Israeli blood on their hands, in phases as the talks continued, they said.

Let's Have General Solicitation As Congress Intended It

sec-sealEveryone passionate about the startup company funding ecosystem was overjoyed by the news last week that ?general solicitation? would soon be okay for startups looking for angel investors. With one fell stroke, the artificial networking inefficiency imposed by the ban on public communication would be gone. Entrepreneurs and accredited investors would be able to talk freely. Startups would have no impediments to tweeting, blogging, taking out Facebook ads, or engaging in any other kind of social media (or old media) to optimize both the chance to get funded and the chance to fully and expeditiously fill out financing rounds.

Costa of Portugal wins Stage 19 of Tour de France

LE GRAND-BORNAND, France (AP) ? Rui Costa of Portugal won the mountainous 19th stage of the Tour de France with a solo breakaway on the final climb, while Chris Froome retained the overall lead in rainy conditions on Friday.

Costa secured his second stage win of the race after catching Frenchman Pierre Roland about a quarter of the way up the fourth and final major ascent of Col de la Croix Fry.

"A lot of Portuguese fans have supported me through this Tour and I want to thank them," Costa said through a translator.

German veteran Andreas Kloeden was second, 46 seconds behind, and Belgian Jan Bakelants was 1:44 back in third. Froome and Alberto Contador finished together several minutes behind Costa.

Froome maintained his lead of 5:11 over Contador. He is two days from becoming the second British rider to win the race after Bradley Wiggins last year.

The 127-mile trek featured two HC climbs and two Category 1 ascents between Bourg-d'Oisans and Le Grand-Bornand in the snow-capped peaks of the Alps.

Contador was expected to attack Froome on the long downhill finish, but perhaps because of the rain, the attack never came.

"I didn't want to attack in the downhill," Contador said. "A lot of people like me and when they see me attacking downhill they get scared."

Froome said he wanted to remain cautious.

"Even though there wasn't much attacking, it was really tough out there," Froome said. "I certainly feel a big sigh of relief. Today was a day I was nervous about, happy to put it behind us."

Now Contador has only Stage 20 from Annecy to Annecy-Semnoz on Saturday to close the large gap on Froome.

"It all depends on how my legs are tomorrow," Contador said. "It depends how I feel."

Froome was not attacked up the first of the two big Hors Categorie climbs to Col du Glandon. The HC climbs are considered so tough they are beyond classification.

The stage then undulated through the valleys and up several big hills, including the Category 1 climbs of Col de l'Epine and Col de la Croix Fry, then ended with a sharp descent to the ski resort of Le Grand Bornand in south-eastern France.

In heavy rain, Costa reached the top and prepared for a long and slippery descent of some 8 miles. Costa's other stage win was up to Super-Besse ski station in 2011.

Despite his two stage wins, Costa is down in 24th place and 42:16 behind Froome. Colombian climber Nairo Quintana is 5:32 behind and third overall.

"The Tour is a very important race for me. The GC is something for the future, we will see," Costa said. "I am happy to have won two stages, especially as it's the centenary Tour so that makes it more special."

"There was a moment when I wanted to attack and thought about it," Contador said, "but then I thought it was best to reach the finish line with Roman."

Women's health care going from bad to worse in Texas

Planned Parenthood is closing three clinics in Texas in response to the ongoing effects of the state's broader defunding of women's health care and, in one case, the state's new anti-abortion law. Those clinic closings?only one of a clinic that provided abortions?means the health care situation for women in the state, especially women who don't live in urban areas and who don't have good health insurance, is getting worse. And it was already bad:
About a year after Texas slashed its family-planning budget by two-thirds, with 50 clinics shutting down as a result,?the Texas Policy Evaluation Project?surveyed 300 pregnant women seeking an abortion in Texas. Nearly half said they were "unable to access the birth control that they wanted to use" in the three months before they became pregnant. Among the reasons:?cost, lack of insurance, inability to find a clinic, and inability get a prescription. The?state's health commission says?Texas will see nearly?24,000?unplanned births?between 2014 and 2015 thanks to these cuts, raising state and federal taxpayer's Medicaid costs by up to $273?million. [...]

The Planned Parenthood clinics that anti-choice legislators?booted from the state's Women's Health Program serviced?nearly 50 percent of the program's patients. Along with contraceptive counseling, the clinics provided basic screenings for cancer, hypertension, and other key problems. There's no shortage of need: women in Texas suffer high rates?of?STIs?and unintended pregnancies compared to national figures, and the state ranks?50th?for diabetes prevalence in?women.

Statistics like these show clearly that what Texas Republican lawmakers really care about isn't abortion?if it was, they'd be making damn sure women had access to every kind of birth control under the sun. No, they're engaged in a much broader attack on women's health. Poor women's health, specifically. And their actions will lead to more unplanned pregnancies and more unsafe, unregulated abortions.

Join Daily Kos and Planned Parenthood Action Fund in sending a message: The fight to defend women's health and rights isn't over, and we're in it for the long run.

Samsung announces 3,000 MB/s enterprise SSD, shames competition

The ink has barely dried on Samsung's last SSD announcement and the South Korean manufacturer has already made it obsolete by orders of magnitude. This 2.5-inch enterprise-class SSD isn't for us regular Joes, but if you thought the company's EVO 840's 540 MB/s was zippy, hold on to your desk chair. The newly announced NVMe SSD XS1715 reads data at a mind-numbing 3,000 MB/s. Hitting these absurd numbers isn't without a caveat, though, as this SSD won't run on a SATA-6 port -- it requires a PCIe hookup. When these speed demons do arrive, they'll be available in 400GB, 800GB and 1.6TB sizes. Oh, and we want one. For business.

COLUMN: New Facebook page for local sports fans

In the years I?ve been involved in local news a lot has changed. We have great new tools that help us bring in readers, even in the early stages of newsgathering.

    Some things, though, never change.

    Take sports.

Some readers love sports, but there are an awful lot who don?t give two hoots.

In the newspaper, we always handled it by printing sports in a different section.

Don?t like sports? Toss it away, or give it to the family member who loves sports.

He or she might not even read the news.

As they say, it takes all kinds and believe me, among our readers, there are all kinds.

This is why we?ve launched a new sports-only Facebook page.

No law and disorder, no tax increases, elections, abortion, wars, gun control or health care - just sports. Continued...

There?s another thing I?ve learned about sports fans. They all want the same thing in their sports report - more.

That?s a little joke, because ?more sports? means different things to different sports fans.

There are very few who like it all.

Some people like NASCAR, but hate golf. Some like high school football, are lukewarm about college games and can?t stand pro ball. Some follow every stat in baseball, others find baseball boring and can?t wait for hoops season.

Some are runners, while others avoid even walking when they don?t have to. There is no typical sports fan; each is unique, like a fingerprint or snowflake.

The way to serve sports fans is to have as much as we can, so the readers can cherry-pick what they want.

But this approach doesn?t serve our non-sports fans very well. This is the reason we decided to establish a second Facebook page devoted to local sports.

What will appear on this new Facebook page?

OK, there will be links to our sports stories, tweets, touts and photos from local contests, usually as they?re happening.

    But what else? Continued...

This is where you can play a big role.

It?s bare-bones now, but we want to link to other local Facebook pages, a sort of a clearing house for all sporting things local. Beyond that, we want to be the area?s main source for sports information in print and online, delivering what readers want when and where they want it.

If you have a suggestion, please stop by and like our Facebook page or or email me or the Sports Department at: Sports@OneidaDispatch.com

Our Facebook pages. If you click ?Like? you will receive our news on your news feed:

    Freak show: Lincecum spins no-no

    BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO ? This was, without any doubt, the happiest of Lincecum Days.

Against the Padres, Lincecum is forever Cy Young. But he was even more than that Saturday night. For all the lofty heights he?s reached in his career ? two Cy Young Awards, two World Series rings, eternal admiration in the Bay Area ? his accomplishment at Petco Park might taste the sweetest.
    ?
Lincecum threw the first no-hitter of his career, the 15th in franchise history, the seventh in the Giants' San Francisco era and their third in five years, joining Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez after dazzling the San Diego Padres in the Giants? 9-0 victory at Petco Park.

Hunter Pence made the most spectacular defensive save, charging to make a sliding catch of Alexi Amarista?s sinking line drive to end the eighth. Lincecum raised a fist as Pence scrambled to his feet.

[RELATED: No-hitter is meaningful for defensive stars Pence, Sandoval]

Pence once joked that Cain wouldn?t have thrown his perfect game since he wouldn?t have made the catch that Blanco did. Turns out he?s a handy man to have, though.

Lincecum had taken a no-hit bid to the seventh inning twice before in his career. He?d never taken one to the eighth. He hadn?t even thrown a complete game since May 21, 2011, when he three-hit the A?s.

It cost him a career high 148 pitches ? 10 more than he?d ever thrown in his career -- but he struck out Chase Headley, got Carlos Quentin to fly out to left field, and then Yonder Alonso lofted a fly ball that left fielder Gregor Blanco squeezed to set off a celebration.

Posey tackled Lincecum from behind almost the moment Blanco made the catch as the team stormed the field. Ryan Vogelsong doused everyone with the water bucket. And the Giants gleefully propped up their former ace who mixed guts and guile as he pulled one more start out of his brilliant past.

Lincecum walked four, hit a batter and struck out 13 ? his most since a 15-strikeout game in 2009.

    Starting pitching report

Just like in 2009, when Jonathan Sanchez had been banished to the bullpen before returning to throw his no-hitter against the Padres, this was a feat that you couldn?t see coming.

Lincecum hadn?t won in six starts since June 4 and his drought was even worse on the road. He entered with an 0-6 record and 5.82 ERA in his last seven starts away from AT&T Park. He hadn?t won on the road since April 3 at Dodger Stadium.

But there were signs in recent weeks that he had turned a corner, had learned to mix his pitches and to use his curveball to set up his more reliable changeup. And four years and three days after Sanchez?s feat, Lincecum joined franchise lore.

By the second time through the lineup, Lincecum had struck out every Padre at least once except for Carlos Quentin. And he matched a career best by striking out six consecutive hitters from the second to the fourth innings. The only other time he did that was June 23, 2011 vs. Twins.

That was one measure of how good his stuff was. It was fooling everyone.

Lincecum?s 26 swings and misses were the most in a start in his career. He got nine of them on sliders, six on changeups, six on fastballs and five on curves.

In summary, everything was sharp. Everything was lethal. Even if he doesn?t throw 95 mph any longer.

Lincecum hadn?t had a double-digit strikeout game all season before he fanned 11 against the Mets, then followed it up with something even more brilliant against his favorite foil.

He put together consecutive double-digit strikeout games for the first time since 2010. He has 34 double-digit strikeout games in his career.

[RELATED: How Tim Lincecum no-hit the Padres: `I'm evolving as a pitcher']

    Bullpen report

The bullpen was busy from the sixth inning. But nobody was going to come through that gate until Lincecum gave up a hit.

    At the plate

The Giants? offensive awakening continued, and two of their most important hitters could exhale after a trying first half.

Pablo Sandoval doubled in each of his first two at-bats ? his first game with multiple extra-base hits since ? yep, Game? 1 of the World Series, when he belted three home runs against the Detroit Tigers.

Hunter Pence hit a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning, giving him as many RBIs with one swing as he had in his previous 17 games combined. Pence also homered to complete a five-RBI night ? his most since 2009 with Houston.

Pence was 1 for 26 with runners in scoring position before the triple, which made it 8-0.

And Brandon Belt hit a two-run homer that traveled 414 feet. It was his 10th of the season, setting a career high.

One more: Sandoval has knocked in a run in three consecutive games ? the first time he?s done that since May 11-15.

Buster Posey did his usual thing with three hits and three runs, too ? proving once again that when the middle of the order hits, good things happen.

    In field

Sandoval?s defensive range has been much maligned, but he made a clean stop down the line of pinch hitter Jesus Guzman?s grounder and then set and fired across the diamond for the out to end the seventh.

The play of the night belonged to Pence, though.

    Attendance

The Padres announced 40,342 paid. You tend to hear Giants fans loudest here. But by the ninth, everyone was a Lincecum fan.

    Up next

The Giants and Padres complete their four-game series at Petco Park on Sunday, then head off for the All-Star break. Barry Zito (4-6, 4.62 ERA) takes the mound, and unbelievably, he?s still looking for his first road win of the season. The Padres will start left-hander Eric Stults (7-7, 3.50). First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. PDT.

Seven peacekeepers killed in Sudan's Darfur region

CAIRO (Reuters) - Seven peacekeepers were killed and 17 wounded when they came under heavy fire from gunmen in Sudan's strife-torn Darfur region on Saturday, the peacekeeping force said, the worst toll from a single incident since its deployment in 2008.

Law and order has collapsed in much of Darfur, where mainly African tribes took up arms in 2003 against the Arab-led government in Khartoum, which they accuse of discriminating against them.

Violence has surged since January as government forces, rebels and Arab tribes, armed by Khartoum early in the conflict, fight over resources and land. Peacekeepers often get attacked when they try to find out what is happening on the ground.

A large group of unknown gunmen attacked a patrol in an area in South Darfur where peacekeeping is the responsibility of Tanzanian forces, the African Union/United Nations-led UNAMID force said. Reinforcements managed to rescue the peacekeepers after an "extended firefight".

Two of the 17 wounded soldiers and police officers were female, UNAMID said. It did not give nationalities, but a U.N. source said most casualties were probably Tanzanians.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was "outraged" by the attack, his press office said in a statement.

"The Secretary-General condemns this heinous attack on UNAMID, the third in three weeks, and expects that the government of Sudan will take swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice," the statement said.

The site of the attack is close to Nyala, Darfur's biggest city, where competing security forces fought for days last week, looting the main market and offices of aid agencies, witnesses said.

Diplomats say the more than 16,000 peacekeepers are struggling with equipment problems, poor training of some contingents and the reluctance of some governments like Egypt to send their soldiers into dangerous areas.

The force has no joint command, which hampers coordination and rapid deployment to hot spots.

About 300,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Darfur this year by fighting, according to the United Nations.

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and some aides on charges of masterminding war crimes in Darfur. They deny the charges and refuse to recognize the court.

Reports from Darfur are hard to verify as Sudan severely restricts travel by journalists, aid workers and diplomats.

Apple?s free apps of the week: Angry Birds Star Wars app

If you love looking for Apple?s free apps of the day and week, then you will be glad to know that the new free app of the week is Angry Birds Star Wars. The game was updated to version 1.3.0 last month with a number of improvements and these include some new bonus levels, a new boss fight, power-ups, 20 extra Cloud City levels and a new character.

You can head to the iTunes page for Apple?s App Store right here. Just look to the left of that page and you will see the price is currently set to FREE. You should note that there can also be a hidden agenda of app creators and in this situation it is the in-app purchases. These range from just $0.99 all the way up to $19.99, so if you lack self control then this app could cost iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners a lot of money.

Celebrating iOS App Store Five Year Anniversary ? we should also highlight the fact that Apple?s App Store has been going strong for a number of years now and Apple promoted this fact with some free apps. Techno Buffalo took an early stab at what these might be this week and their prediction included Traktor DJ, Where?s My Water?, Tiny Wings and Infinity Blade II. They later updated readers with another article focusing on App of the Week and the five-year celebration.

What paid iOS app would you like to see go free next? Also, we?d love to hear your comments on the most iconic app from the last 5 years in your opinion?

Flynn Robinson gave NBA stars the star treatment

Players come and go in the NBA. They have their glory, get old and live later lives out of the limelight. Unless your name is Michael Jordan or a few others, you depart Earth in the company of family, a few friends and a neighbor or two.

    Then there is Flynn Robinson.

Saturday, at noon at a church in Los Angeles, many tall men with faces and names familiar and revered in basketball will gather to say goodbye at a special memorial service. According to the record books, Robinson wasn't a superstar. According to what people say about how he treated others, he was.

He was a 6-foot-1 shooting guard who played for five NBA teams over seven seasons. After that, he just kept playing. Not for money. Just for the joy.

He proudly told The Times' Jerry Crowe in 2008 that he had been selected "one of the top three players 60-and-over in the world."

He told former UCLA star Lynn Shackelford, Chick Hearn's broadcast sidekick in the early 1970s, that he expected to keep playing after he turned 70, which he did.

When he died May 23, he was 72. The multiple myeloma cancer that was diagnosed in 2012 and ended his life had left him in a wheelchair, his spine damaged from chemotherapy. The bounce he always had in his step on the basketball court needed to find an outlet, and it did in his upbeat attitude.

"When I called, he always told me to call any time," Shackelford says. "The last time I talked to him, he was so excited because Kareem had called him, and that meant so much to him."

Robinson's wife, Nancy Pitts-Robinson, says, "Even though he was battling cancer, he never complained."

Robinson was the backcourt star when Abdul-Jabbar joined the Milwaukee Bucks as a rookie in 1969. Robinson was second on the team in scoring that year and made his only NBA All-Star game appearance.

"When I moved to Milwaukee," Abdul-Jabbar says, "Flynn was living in the same apartment complex, Juneau Village. He was just an easy guy to know, a really friendly person."

Abdul-Jabbar will be among the dozen or so speakers at the memorial service.

Robinson's best days were with the Bucks, who traded him for Oscar Robertson and went on to win the NBA title; and with the Lakers, where he got his own NBA championship ring. That was the famous 1971-72 Lakers, the 33-game winning-streak team that went on to win the title. Robinson backed up Jerry West and Gail Goodrich and averaged 10 points off the bench. It was Abdul-Jabbar and his old Bucks teammates who broke the winning streak.

Bill Sharman, the coach of that legendary team, says, "Flynn was a great shooter and very, very quick. He was a good player and a good team member. We reconnected in the past few years and enjoyed some good times together. He was such a good man, and will be missed by so many."

Robinson never led the league in scoring, but he might have in nicknames.

Hearn labeled him "Instant Offense." Eddie Doucette, the Bucks announcer who placed the perfect label on Abdul-Jabbar's bread-and-butter shot when he christened it the "skyhook," called Robinson the "Electric Eye."

Even in Chicago, where Robinson spent the 1967-68 season with the Bulls and scored 41 points in Game 3 of the playoffs against the Lakers to spark the city's first-ever NBA playoff victory, he had a moniker, "Flingin' Flynn."

In the next game in that playoff series, some guy from the Lakers named West switched over to guard Robinson and Flingin' Flynn shot four for 16.

Keith Erickson, a teammate of Robinson's with the Bulls and the Lakers, will be the master of ceremonies at the memorial service. He says, "Lots of guys get their nose in the air when they make it in the NBA. Not Flynn. He was never bigger than anybody else."

Shackelford says, "He treated strangers like they were a big deal."

Between pickup games at the Westchester YMCA, where he was a fixture, Robinson volunteered, pitched in, helped people. One of his favorite things was to go fishing with a bunch of youngsters, many of whom had never been on a boat before, much less fishing. The man who runs the foundation that organizes those trips, Phil Friedman, has said that one of his favorite memories is of Robinson, dishing out high-fives for hooked fish.

The memorial service will be in the performing arts theater adjacent to the West Angeles Church of God in Christ, 3020 Crenshaw Blvd. It will be open to the public.

    Robinson would like that.

San Diego mayor vows change amid harassment claims

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Bob Filner is embroiled in turmoil less than a year after being elected San Diego's first Democratic mayor in 20 years, facing old questions about his confrontational style and a new challenge over allegations that he sexually harassed women.

Filner on Thursday rejected calls from prominent former supporters to resign but he apologized for mistreating women and pleaded with voters for patience, saying, "I need help." Without detailing his actions, Filner called his behavior inappropriate and wrong and said he "diminished" the office.

"If my behavior doesn't change, I cannot succeed in leading our city," he said. "You have every right to be disappointed in me. I only ask that you give me an opportunity to prove I am capable of change, so that the vision I have for our city's future can be realized."

Former Councilwoman Donna Frye, who is embraced by Filner's liberal base, choked up hours earlier while calling on Filner to step down, calling it one of the most difficult decisions she has made. She said the allegations were based on victims' firsthand accounts but refused to divulge specifics such as the nature of the abuse or whether it occurred while Filner was mayor.

Frye, who said she wouldn't seek office if Filner resigned, was expected to comment Friday on the mayor's apology.

Detractors portrayed Filner, 70, as a short-tempered bully long before he was elected to lead the nation's eighth-largest city in November. As a 10-term congressman, he berated Veterans Affairs officials who testified before him. In 2007, he had a run-in with a United Airlines baggage handler at Dulles International Airport that led to him pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of trespassing.

As mayor, he has clashed repeatedly with the elected city attorney, Jan Goldsmith. He crashed a Goldsmith news conference in February about tourism marketing revenue, commandeered the podium, and accused the city attorney of "unethical and unprofessional conduct" for scrutinizing the mayor's position on the issue through the news media. Last month, he ordered a Goldsmith deputy to leave a closed-door City Council meeting, saying the attorney spoke without being recognized and refused to sit down when told.

Allen Jones, his deputy chief of staff, recently resigned at a staff meeting over what Filner called disagreements about how he was running the office. When Filner asked if anyone else in the room wanted out, Irene McCormack, his communications director, came forward.

In a rare moment of self-reflection during a regular monthly news conference in June, Filner acknowledged the office turbulence caused him to question his behavior.

"Anybody who's intelligent would have to undergo some self-examination," he said.

Yet he also remained feisty and defiant, dismissing the staff departures as normal occurrences under a demanding boss.

"It's a high-pressure, high tension situation, and some people can adapt, some people can't," he said.

Filner, who is divorced, was unequivocally contrite in his apology Thursday, saying he failed to respect women and intimidated them at times. He said he would personally apologize to current and former employees over the next few days and that he is getting professional help.

"It's a good thing that behavior that would have been tolerated in the past is being called out in this generation for what it is: inappropriate and wrong," he said.

On Monday, Filner's fiance, Bronwyn Ingram, said she was ending the engagement, calling it "the only action I can take given the devolvement of our personal relationship."

Some Democratic leaders in San Diego said after Filner's apology that the mayor should stay in office.

"Like all San Diegans, I am deeply disappointed by Mayor Filner's conduct toward women," said Francine Busby, chairwoman of the San Diego County Democratic Party. "Now that he has taken responsibility for his actions, I will hold him to his promises."
