Brand Your At Home Business (On a Shoestring Budget)

You may consider branding to be a marketing function reserved for large corporations with massive budgets, but for work at home moms balancing the demands of a business and family under one roof, it?s actually an invaluable resource towards creating the image you to exude?even if your home office feels less than professional at times! Here?s how create a brand for your home business.

Create a brand personality.?Branding begins by identifying what your businesses is about, and transforming those attributes into qualities that attract customers. Try this simple branding exercise: On a large piece of blank paper, cut and paste images from magazines that embody your businesses? personality, whether represented by pictures of celebrities, words, or emotions. Now, elaborate by imagining your brand as a person (you can even give her a name!) On the same board, write her unique personality traits, the kind of brands she wears and uses, television shows, books, magazines, tech tools and music she treasures, and even, common terms or phrases in her vocabulary. All of these elements make up a brand personality, and laying them out clearly provides a framework for how you present your business going forward, and ensures consistency. There are no right or wrong answers in this creation phase, provided the personality you identify meshes with what you sell, and the people you hope to sell it to.

Develop consistent ?touch points.??In marketing, the term ?touch points? describes all the different places a customer encounters one brand. Though your business is home based, you?ve got many customer touch points, which may include any combination of the following: Your website, blog, social media activities, packages you mail, email and phone communications, marketing materials, business cards, and trade show and industry presence. Now that you?ve identified your brand traits, find unique, and consistent ways to communicate them, through every touch point. For example, a brand with a playful personality would use words like ?Hi there!? versus a formal ?Hello, Sir or Madam? in email communication or order confirmations; a modern brand would most certainly have a presence on trendy social media channels like Pinterest.? Where how and you integrate the brand into touch points is up to you, but it?s all about delivering a consistent message.

Think more office, less home.?Your goal as a work at home is to create the image that you?re a force to be reckoned with?even if you respond to emails in your pajamas! If you don?t have professionally printed business cards, a logo, a website with an appealing design (even if you created it for free), a registered domain name, and an email for that domain, now?s the time.? Take advantage of other technology conveniences that boost your credibility. For example, vendors like Square, Intuit GoPayment, and Google Wallet all offer affordable solutions for accepting secure credit card payments online, or from tablet or smartphone. (It?s worth nothing that one study by Javelin Strategy & Research revealed that customers are most influenced when a vendor shows a ?Visa? logo compared to other payment methods, like PayPal, when it comes to perception of trust and privacy).? Free tools like MailChimp make it simple to create professional-looking email newsletters and email marketing promotions, while Google Voice allows you to establish a free number for business use, that is delivered to your personal email, or mobile phone, so you can take the call when the kids aren?t screaming in the background!

Microsoft 'all in' with Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 - Know Your Cell

The way Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer describes it, there have been three seminal moments for the company: the release of the IBM PC, the Windows 95 launch and the recent launch of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. The company is "all in" with Windows 8, Ballmer said during the company's Build 2012 conference keynote.?

Microsoft calls Windows 8 the "reimagined" version of Windows and it's actually quite a dramatic departure from previous iterations. One look at the touch-friendly, always-updating tile interface and you can clearly see that Microsoft is taking the tablet and mobile future seriously.?

Although it was never said, it's clear that the iPad has had a big impact on the look and feel of Windows 8. As we potentially move to a post-PC world where users just want an easy-to-use computing appliance, Microsoft has made drastic changes to its bread and butter to perform well on a new class of devices. That includes the Microsoft-made Surface tablet, as well as the traditional desktop and laptops.?

You could even say that it all started with the mobile side, as the live-tile interface first debuted with Windows Phone 7 two years ago. Microsoft recently introduced Windows Phone 8?and it shares the same base-level kernal as Windows 8.

Ballmer acknowledged that Windows Phone has been a "small-volume player" but he believes there's tremendous upside for app developers. First of all, he said it will be the best companion platform for Windows 8. If PC sales and volume remain flat, we could still be looking at 400 million Windows 8 users by the time it's all said and done.?

He also said that thanks to Microsoft's services and the just-released Windows Phone 8 SDK, developers will be able to make the best apps on Microsoft's platform. That's obviously subjective but the company has done a much-better job of creating a platform that would be appealing to app makers.?

Also, don't ever say Microsoft doesn't know how to treat its developers. Everyone who attends Build 2012 will receive a free Microsoft Surface, 100GB of SkyDrive storage and a complimentary Nokia Lumia 920. You can be sure that received a lot of cheers.?

Ballmer wasn't exagerating when he said Windows 8 is a big moment for Microsoft, as it may be a major inflection point for the company. For years, Microsoft has held a near monopoly on computing and it has had the profits and clout to show for it.?

But over the last few years, the mobile space has really changed who the big players in computing are. Google's Eric Schmidt likes to describe the "Four Horsemen" of the tech world as Apple, Facebook, Google and Amazon - dismissing Microsoft as a well-run company but one that doesn't innovate.?

While that's just one man's opinion, it's clear that Microsoft is not going to have the market share it once had in the computing space because how we compute is changing. We'll soon have more phones than people out there and these will all be connected to the Internet and will likely be the primary computing device for many, particularly in the fast-growing emerging markets. Throw in the proliferation of tablets and Microsoft needed to make a drastic move like Windows 8 to remain relevant.?

I'm not going to go too far, as the company is still wildly profitable and Windows Phone 8, Windows 8 and Xbox Kinnect show that it still has plenty of innovation left. Windows 8 has already seen 4 million upgrades in three days and it looks like it will be a winner with many consumers.?

I still have my doubts about Windows Phone 8 even though I'm intrigued by it. The new hardware looks fantastic, the design of the software is cool and it looks like the app ecosystem is finally rounding into shape. Still, Microsoft is playiing for third place in the mobile space behind Android and iOS and I'm not certain I see that many reasons to switch other than wanting something a little different.?

For Microsoft's sake, let's hope I'm wrong.?

MoPub Drops Its Price For Ad Network Mediation To Zero

mopub logoIt's the one-year anniversary of MoPub's marketplace for real-time bidding on mobile ads,?and the company is celebrating by eliminating the cost for publishers to participate. CEO Jim Payne told me that the company wants to encourage as many publishers to use the MoPub Marketplace as possible. After all, he said real-time bidding is "a better way of doing things," and bringing more ad inventory into the system means MoPub can make more money from advertisers. And yes, some publishers have declined to participate in the marketplace because the current costs are too high. For example, Payne estimated that under MoPub's current pricing structure, a mid-sized publisher seeing 500 million ad impressions a month could end up paying $25,000.

celebrate-world-pasta-day-with-barilla-the ... - Food Family and Finds

Today our family is joining the World Pasta Day celebration by enjoying an easy pasta meal for dinner thanks to the Modern Family Pasta Cookbook (which you can download yourself). It?s full of inspirational recipes and meal planning tips to make week night dinner prep one less hurdle in your life.

I know for our family that meals during the week nights can be a real challenge. My husband gets off work later in the afternoon than they typical 9-5 job so it pushes our dinnertime later into the evening which coincides with baths, story time and bedtime. That?s one of the biggest reasons we eat a lot of pasta dishes. Well, that and because I absolutely love pasta. I have a few different recipes I cycle through when using pasta but I?m always looking for new ideas. The Modern Family Pasta Cookbook includes lots of quick and easy recipes like this one I made that uses Barilla Whole Grain pasta shells and a some basic ingredients including: tomatoes, basil, onions and some Parmesan cheese.

Barilla Whole Grain Pasta Shells with Tomatoes Basil and Parmesan Cheese

How do you feel about Meal Planning and Pasta?

Personally I find my biggest hurdle to planning weeknight meals is a combination of my husband?s work schedule and my constant need to keep up with household chores. I try to help reduce the stress of dinner time cooking by picking meals that take 30 minutes or less to prepare and plan our dinners for later in the evening.

Leading contributors to a hectic lifestyle, making meal-planning and preparation a challenge:

  1. Work
  2. Household chores
  3. Errands
  4. ?Kids? after school activities
  5. Kids? homework

Pasta provides the perfect meal solution for time-limited households:

  • Pasta is recognized by parents and non-parents as a tasty (88%) and easy (87%) meal option and one that can be prepared using on-hand ingredients from a pantry (82%).
  • Other benefits of pasta that help alleviate chaotic schedules include that it is versatile (52%), a quick go-to meal (51%) and allows for multitasking while it?s cooking (44%).

World Pasta Day isn?t just about sharing recipes and time saving tips. It also happens to be a day that you can help others put food on their table. Today only you can visit the Barilla Facebook page and Share A Hug?tab where you can share a virtual hug with friends and Barilla will donate the equivalent of 4 meals to Feeding America. You?ll also get hugged back with a coupon for $1 off Barilla pasta and sauces.

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Barilla. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.

Editor's Note | November 2012 - Articles | Travel + Leisure

?It?s the jump cuts between unlike places that keep the action interesting? were the words from T+L contributing editor Adam Sachs (?When the Right Trip Goes Wrong?) that kept echoing through my mind as I tried to get my enthusiasm up for a jump cut of my own last Friday morning. Having arrived home in New York at 8 p.m. the previous evening, I was unpacking my suitcase from a week in Central Europe and repacking it for three nights in London, a challenging maneuver that ultimately led me to the chair in my central London hotel room where I am now seated. This month, in an instance of magazine articles mirroring life, our cover feature, ?101 Places Every Traveler Should Know,? catapults from the first-century-B.C. monument of Petra, in Jordan, to Louis XIV?s gardens in Versailles, and from a cruise on the Amazon to a drop-by at New Orleans?s Preservation Hall. Endlessly debated in our offices, this travel life list is the result of a prodigious polling effort?beginning in-house with the magazine?s editors and fanning out to our global network of correspondents, contributors, and experts, and expanding beyond to some noted personalities with a lot to say. One thing is certain: the list, in all its glorious eccentricity, will provoke some strong reactions from you, our readers.

Of course, the places we highlight in every issue of T+L are ones we think you should know. This month they range from the Caribbean to Paris, and from Panama to Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Our cruise editor, Jane Wooldridge, offers her personal account of the attractions of vacations at sea, and our annual Air Travel Report will help you get past the ever-changing hurdles?including security?faster.

No matter the jump cuts along the way, I am a strong advocate for traveling slowly whenever you can. This morning I took advantage of a gap in my meetings schedule and went for a walk along the Thames, heading south toward Westminster Bridge then crossing over and returning on Waterloo Bridge, where a sweet Saudi couple pushing a baby carriage asked me to take a picture of them against a backdrop of the London Eye and Big Ben. As I made my way through Victoria Embankment Gardens toward my hotel, I was thinking not about work, but about flowers, and how much later they bloom in London than in my Connecticut garden. Between sometimes jarringly fast transitions, travel offers delectable opportunities to take a deep breath and bask in where you are.

Rajat Gupta gets two years in prison for insider trading

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Disgraced Wall Street titan and philanthropist Rajat Gupta was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday, a much lighter sentence than U.S. prosecutors had demanded, by a judge who called his insider trading crimes "disgusting" and "a terrible breach of trust."

Gupta was also ordered to pay a $5 million fine. He was convicted in Manhattan federal court last June for leaking Goldman Sachs boardroom secrets to Raj Rajaratnam, the hedge fund manager at the center of a U.S. government crackdown on insider trading over the past four years.

Some legal experts said Wednesday's sentence came as a surprise, while others said the judge struck a fine balance.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff told a somber courtroom audience, including Gupta's wife and four adult daughters, that the illegal sharing of corporate secrets at the height of the 2008 financial crisis "was the functional equivalent of stabbing Goldman in the back."

Gupta, 63, gave no visible reaction to the sentence, which was given at the end of a 30-minute statement in which the judge spelled out the businessman's "extraordinary" philanthropy over decades that stood in stark contrast to his crimes.

Bill Gates, Microsoft Corp's co-founder, and former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan were among 400 friends and luminaries who had written letters to the judge urging leniency.

During the trial, the court heard how Gupta had tipped off his then friend and business associate Rajaratnam between September and October of 2008. Within minutes of a conference call of members of Goldman's board on September 23, 2008, Gupta told Rajaratnam that influential investor Warren Buffett was infusing $5 billion into the investment bank. Rajaratnam traded on the information as the market was closing.

Rakoff said during the two-and-a-half hour sentencing proceedings that the t ip "was not only overwhelming, but it was disgusting in its implications ... a terrible breach of trust" at a time when Goldman Sachs was in turmoil.

But the judge also said: "I have never encountered a defendant whose past history suggests such an extraordinary devotion ... to people in need."

Gupta had faced a maximum sentence of 20 years for securities fraud and five years for conspiracy. Federal judges have wide leeway in sentencing and Rakoff has a reputation for veering from guidelines for courts in handing down punishment.

MINIMUM SECURITY PRISON SOUGHT

Rakoff ordered Gupta to begin his sentence on January 8, 2013. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons will decide where, but his lawyer asked for the minimum security prison in Otisville, New York.

The judge denied Gupta's lawyer's bid to have him freed on bail pending an appeal, which could last as long as two years. His lawyer, Gary Naftalis, said in a statement that "we believe the facts of this case demonstrate that Mr. Gupta is innocent."

The former Goldman director is the most influential corporate figure to be convicted in the wide U.S. probe of insider trading involving fund managers, traders, consultants and executives. He is a former global head of the McKinsey & Co management consultancy, and once sat on the boards of Procter & Gamble Co and American Airlines, as well advising philanthropies including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gupta was born poor in India and orphaned as a teenager but rose to the top of the corporate and philanthropic elite.

His sentence was less than the eight to 10 years sought by prosecutors, but more than the probation and community service in Rwanda sought by Gupta's lawyers. The judge dismissed that proposal as "a kind of Peace Corps for insider traders."

It was also less than some other insider trading defendants who were jailed for between four and 10 years. Rajaratnam is serving an 11-year prison sentence, one of the longest for insider trading.

On Thursday, a U.S. appeals court in New York is set to hear Rajaratnam's appeal. He argues prosecutors should not have been able to play phone taps of his conversations at his trial because he says they were improperly obtained.

"SANCTITY OF CORPORATE CONFIDENCE"

Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Tarlowe argued for a sentence of at least eight years, telling the court "Mr Gupta knew as much about the sanctity of these types of corporate confidences as anybody, and that's what makes it so shocking."

New York securities class action and shareholder rights lawyer Mark Rifkin said the judge "understood both sides of the argument, and the relatively light sentence he imposed balances Gupta's misuse of his position against a lifetime of good work."

But Andrew Stoltmann, an attorney and investor rights advocate based in Chicago, wondered whether Gupta's "Mother Teresa-like halo" had warranted a sentence that was "little more than a slap on the wrist."

"He had such an important role at some of these companies that it is kind of the ultimate betrayal of trust," he said.

When Gupta addressed the court, he read from a statement for six minutes, using bland language that stopped short of fully admitting his conduct, but apologizing to "extraordinary institutions and outstanding people" and to his family.

"I feel terrible that they have been burdened with totally undeserved negative attention. I apologize to them and ask for their forgiveness," Gupta said.

Naftalis, arguing for a lenient sentence, said his client had suffered a "fall from grace of Greek tragedy proportions."

"This was an iconic figure who had been a role model for countless people around the globe," he said. "He is no more."

The case is USA v Gupta, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 11-cr-907. (Editing by Martha Graybow, Matthew Lewis, Gary Hill and Paul Tait)

ESRB adds ratings for downloadable games

1 hr.

While?your kid plays a game downloaded through his Xbox, he may be telling others exactly where he is in the real world. And you thought all you had to worry about was what happened within the game.

Parents concerned about the information their kids share when playing downloaded games on devices like an?Xbox or PlayStation?are getting help from the same group that rates boxed games. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), the self-regulatory body for the video game industry, Wednesday extended its ratings system to downloadable games and now includes guides about the kinds of personal information a game is able to access.

The rating system for digitally delivered games is the same as you see on the physical games you buy in a store, familiar ratings like Everyone, Teen and Mature, and content descriptors that denote violence and sexual themes.

The new interactive element ratings shed light on?privacy ?aspects of gameplay. They include:

  • "Shares Info": Personal information such as email address, phone number or?credit card ?is provided to third parties
  • "Shares Location": Can display the player?s location with other players
  • "Users Interact": Players can get in direct communication with others through social media and networks

Buyers see the ratings prior to downloading the game. However, these new ratings don?t say exactly what gets shared. For example, you won?t know if a game rated ?Shares Info? only gives access to an email address or also provides your child?s phone number.

ESRB ratings are assigned through an online questionnaire that the developer completes; they are not determined by independent reviewers.

Participation by game developers and download services is optional. Services implementing the new system include Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation Certified devices, Nintendo eShop, Wii Shop Channel and ?Windows 8.

Facebook like button with facebook photos

I've been using the Facebook Like plugin (the like button) in order to allow people to like my facebook posts through my website.

All goes well, providing the URL to like from the actual post (eg. http://www.facebook.com/xxxxxxxxx/posts/yyyyyyyyy). It displays the like button along with the number of likes that post currently has and allows me to like it. If I'm not logged in to facebook, I'm given a prompt to log in as expected.

However, once that post is of type "photo" (as seen in the graph api) and as such contains a photo, the above method does not work. Even tho the direct link to the post page shows that it has likes, the like button still shows 0 likes, and clicking the like button increases that 0 to 1, but does not increase the like count on that post/photo. It's as if facebook does not connect likes to a post when it contains a photo.

My question is... is it possible to find the proper URL to add to the facebook button in order for it to fetch the right likes from the photo/post (just like it would if there's only a post), and if so, how would I go about finding that URL?

81.5 MW Solar Power Plant for Japan by 2014

?
Japan is now building its?largest solar power plant to date in the Oita Prefecture. It will be finished in about 18 months. Approximately 350,000 solar panels will be used, covering a 105 hectare area. Marubeni Corp. is constructing the new facility and it will sell the power to Kyushu Electric Power Company. (Marubeni currently has about 5% renewables in its energy portfolio, but it intends to grow that number to 10% in the next several years.)

Oita_takasago.jpg

The 81.5 MW project will be built on the Oita coast due to the open space there. Oita is on Kyushu Island in southern Japan, an area with mountains and an active volcano. Agriculture is prominent.

Very aggressive feed-in tariffs are the incentive the Japanese government is using to try to make a dramatic shift away from nuclear power toward renewable energy. Another large solar project is under way at Kagoshima with a 70 MW potential. It is the largest solar project currently under construction in Japan.
?

?
The Fukushima disaster was a huge wake-up call about the dangers of aging and outdated nuclear power plant designs. Initially, it seemed the Japanese government was reluctant or very hesitant about acknowledging the severity of the damage.

However, by deciding to shutter nuclear power there and make the transition to other energy sources, it has chosen the most rational course. How it plays out remains to be seen. It will be very interesting to see if there is an increase in tourism in Oita due to the presence of a new solar plant and such a large one. Oita is already known for natural beauty and hiking.

New Zealand Government Wins 'Couch Potato' AwardYour Health ...

From NZ Doctor?..

Australia has beaten New Zealand in a low-scoring Trans-Tasman ?Test Match? of obesity policies and programs at the Australian New Zealand Obesity Society?s (ANZOS) annual Couch Potato Awards announced Thursday night.

This year?s awards pitted the two nations against each other across eight areas of government action including leadership, food marketing, food labelling, fiscal policies and social marketing to tackle the pressing issue of obesity in both countries.

Jane Martin, Chair of the Public Health Subcommittee of ANZOS said while Australia won on points, both countries failed to score highly in any of the categories, despite obesity rates reaching record levels in Australia and New Zealand.

?While Australians and New Zealanders like to perceive themselves as sporty, outdoorsy types, they are in fact exercising too little and eating too much junk food. Around two-thirds of Australians and New Zealanders are overweight or obese.

?It?s extremely concerning that despite these rates, the New Zealand government has shown particularly weak leadership in the area of health promotion, in fact it appears adverse to it while providing concessions to the processed food industry.

?In the past few years, the New Zealand Government has defunded programs such as Healthy Eating, Health Action and pulled away from healthy eating policies in schools. It?s vital these are reinstated and extended to the public sector such as hospitals. There is emerging evidence that community-based interventions such as Project Energize in Waikato could be effective but this must be scaled up to reach children across New Zealand,? Ms Martin.

While both countries share the ongoing problems of confusing food labelling and relentless, unhealthy food marketing targeting children, Australia has taken a more comprehensive approach to tackling obesity through whole of community programs.

?In Australia, particularly Victoria and South Australia, we?ve seen state governments using federal funding to value-add and enhance programs such as the Prevention Community Model (Victoria) and Obesity Prevention and Lifestyle program (SA) that tackle obesity through programs in schools, workplaces and in the broader community.

?Australia has also made some progress via the Australian National Preventative Health Agency in social marketing ? creating advertising to encourage healthier behaviours such as the Swap It campaign -however more could certainly be done in this area,? Ms Martin said.

American Academy of Pediatrics weighs in for first time on organic foods for children

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Parents know it's important for children to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and whole grains. But it's less clear whether spending the extra money on organic foods will bring a significant benefit to their children's health.

To offer guidance to parents -- and the pediatricians caring for their children's health -- the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has conducted an extensive analysis of scientific evidence surrounding organic produce, dairy products and meat. The conclusion is mixed: While organic foods have the same vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, proteins, lipids and other nutrients as conventional foods, they also have lower pesticide levels, which may be significant for children. Organically raised animals are also less likely to be contaminated with drug-resistant bacteria because organic farming rules prohibit the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics.

However, in the long term, there is currently no direct evidence that consuming an organic diet leads to improved health or lower risk of disease. No large studies in humans have been performed that specifically address this issue.

"What's most important is that children eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products, whether those are conventional or organic foods. This type of diet has proven health benefits," said Janet Silverstein, MD, FAAP, a member of the AAP Committee on Nutrition and one of the lead authors of the report. "Many families have a limited food budget, and we do not want families to choose to consume smaller amounts of more expensive organic foods and thus reduce their overall intake of healthy foods like produce."

The AAP report, "Organic Foods: Health and Environmental Advantages and Disadvantages," was released on Oct. 22 at the AAP National Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans. It will be published in the November 2012 issue of Pediatrics (published online Oct. 22). The report outlines the research that has been conducted on organic foods, including convincing evidence of lower exposure to pesticides and less contamination of livestock with drug-resistant bacteria.

"At this point, we simply do not have the scientific evidence to know whether the difference in pesticide levels will impact a person's health over a lifetime, though we do know that children -- especially young children whose brains are developing -- are uniquely vulnerable to chemical exposures," said Joel Forman, MD, FAAP, a member of the AAP Council on Environmental Health and one of the lead authors of the AAP clinical report.

If cost is a factor, families can be selective in choosing organic foods, Dr. Forman said. Some conventionally grown fruits and vegetables tend to have lower pesticide residues. The AAP cites organic shopper's guides like those provided by Consumer Reports and the Environmental Working Group as references for consumers. The AAP found no individual health benefit from purchasing organic milk, but emphasizes that all milk should be pasteurized to reduce the risk of bacterial infections. Raw milk increases the risk of serious infection with bacteria including Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter and Brucella.

Purchasing meat from organic farms that do not use antibiotics for nontherapeutic uses has the potential to reduce antibiotic resistance in bacteria that infect people. The AAP calls for large, well-designed, prospective cohort studies that directly measure environmental exposures such as estrogen at low levels to understand the impact of hormonal exposure of children through milk and meat.

The AAP report also notes that the motivation to choose organic produce, meat and dairy products may be reasonably based on larger environmental issues, as well as human health impacts like pollution and global climate change.

"Pediatricians want families to have the information they need to make wise food choices," said Dr. Forman. "We hope that additional research will improve our understanding of these issues, including large studies that measure environmental exposures and neurodevelopment."

Baltimore Tourism Group Backs Expanded Gambling ? CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ? Time is ticking on the upcoming election and the clock is running out to sway voters on expanding gambling in Maryland. Now, as Gigi Barnett reports, the referendum to bring table games to the state is getting support from the tourism industry. Supporters say more gambling means more visitors to Baltimore.

?I think it will be a good thing for the state of Maryland,? said one ad.

?The big losers are Maryland taxpayers,? counters a different ad.

Whether for or against Question 7 on the upcoming ballot, voters are a little more than two weeks away from hitting the polls. Television ads worth millions are overtaking the airwaves. It?s in this time crunch that one group for expanded gambling in the city is backing Question 7.

Related Story: Voters In RI, Ore., Md. To Vote On Casinos

?Harrah?s and Caesar?s are going to come to town,? said Tom Noonan. ?They?ve got 40 million card-carrying members that they go out and market, they?re going to go out and market Baltimore as a new destination for them, and people will come to town.?

Tom Noonan runs Visit Baltimore, the city?s main tourism arm. He says bigger games mean more visitors to Baltimore and greater job numbers.

?People will come to town and stay in hotel rooms and obviously go gambling and use restaurants. For us, it?s all about growing the tourism industry,? Noonan said.

And where the city is planning to build its new casino makes a big difference, according to Noonan. It?s set to sit right next to M&T Bank Stadium and Oriole Park.

?That?s a great one-two punch together. People are coming 91 nights out of the year for either baseball or football games. They?ll have the opportunity to go right over to the casino and come back,? said Noonan.

That may be a sweet deal for gamblers, but for some voters, a new casino on Russell Street only poses a traffic tie-up.

?Whatever is going on between football and baseball, and you?re going to clutter it up with 3,000 more people a night. It?s just going to be a mess,? said voter Harry Kunze.

If Question 7 is approved by voters, Baltimore?s planned two-storey casino would offer more than 3,700 slots to visitors.

Kevin McLaughlin, spokesman for ?Get The Facts: Vote No On Question 7? sent WJZ this statement: ?Baltimore developers have sold the people of Maryland a bill of goods. Question 7 is a great deal for multimillioniare casino owners, but a bad deal for Baltimore taxpayers.?

NY nurse testifies about scuffle with RFK son

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. (AP) ? A maternity ward nurse testified in tears Monday that a son of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy twisted her arm and kicked another nurse to the floor as he tried to leave a suburban hospital with his newborn son.

The nurses tried to stop Douglas Kennedy because there had been no order for the baby's release "and I felt there was a security risk," said the witness, Anna Lane.

She said Kennedy told her he didn't need permission.

Kennedy went on trial Monday in Mount Kisco Town Court on charges of harassment and child endangerment. He calls the charges absurd. He says he was just taking the baby, 2-day-old Anthony Boru Kennedy, for some fresh air outside Northern Westchester Hospital.

But nurses testified that would have been very irregular. Angela Adamo said that when Kennedy approached the nurses' station with his request, she tried to dissuade him because it "didn't seem to make much sense to me."

She also said the baby, in a hat and blanket, wasn't appropriately dressed for a January evening.

Kennedy, the baby cradled in his right arm, was not persuaded and moved to the elevator and stairwell, where Lane and another nurse, Carrie Luciano, tried to block the way, Lane testified.

"He grabbed my left hand ... and twisted my arm," Lane said. "He kicked Carrie and she went flying in one direction and he went in the other direction."

The prosecution played choppy time-lapse surveillance video for Judge John Donohue, who is hearing the case without a jury. The video showed Luciano falling to the floor near the elevator but did not show what caused her fall.

Lane broke down during her testimony and on cross-examination said recounting the incident was traumatic. But Kennedy's lawyer, Robert Gottlieb, pointed out that she had gone on NBC's "Today" show in February, "with a heck of a lot more people watching than are in this courtroom" to talk about it.

He also got Lane to say she is contemplating a lawsuit, reading from her lawyer's settlement offer to Kennedy, which was rejected.

The witnesses testified about a flurry of alarms that were set off during the incident. One blared when Kennedy allegedly took a security band off the baby boy. Two hospital-wide alarms ? "code purple" and "code pink" ? were called in to declare a disorderly situation and a missing baby.

Defense lawyer Celia Gordon said the "code pink" was inappropriate because it's meant for baby abductions. Nurse Angela Adamo said she ordered the "code pink" when she heard someone say, "He's taking the baby." But she also testified that she never thought Kennedy would fail to return with the infant.

In her opening statement, Gordon said Kennedy was acting on instinct rather than intent when he kicked at Lane.

But prosecutor Amy Puerto said Kennedy did not stop until he encountered a security guard on a stairwell. She alleged he said to the guard, "Do you know who I am?"

The hospital's security chief, Eric Hartmann, testified that he called Mount Kisco police when he heard about the incident. On cross-examination, he acknowledged that he did not have much information about what had happened and told police it was "some kind of custody thing."

Kennedy's wife, Molly, came to court with him on Monday. The couple issued a statement in February that said, "Our simple desire to take our son outside for fresh air has been warped into a charge of child endangerment."

Kennedy is the 10th of 11 children of Robert and Ethel Kennedy. His father was assassinated in 1968. President John F. Kennedy, his uncle, was assassinated in 1963.

Kennedy's arrest was the beginning of a difficult year for the Kennedys in New York. His sister-in-law, Mary Kennedy, hanged herself in May in Bedford. His sister, Kerry Kennedy, has pleaded not guilty to drug-impaired driving after an accident on Interstate 684.

Coronary angioplasty improves cardiac arrest survival

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Coronary angioplasty improves survival in all patients with out of hospital cardiac arrest, according to research presented at the Acute Cardiac Care Congress 2012. The study was presented by Dr Annamaria Nicolino from the Santa Corona General Hospital in Pietra Ligure, Italy.

The Acute Cardiac Care Congress 2012 is the first annual meeting of the newly launched Acute Cardiovascular Care Association (ACCA) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). It takes place during 20-22 October in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Istanbul Lufti Kirdar Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICEC).

Out of hospital cardiac arrest is a leading cause of mortality and acute coronary occlusion is the leading cause of cardiac arrest. It is well known that when an electrocardiogram (ECG) shows that a patient has ST elevation, primary angiography must be done as soon as possible. If severe coronary disease is found, coronary angioplasty with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is performed to open the blocked vessel.

But Dr Nicolino said: "There is controversy about what to do when a patient with out of hospital cardiac arrest has a normal ECG that does not show ST elevation. ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines are inconclusive -- they say to consider performing coronary angiography but they don't say 'do it' or 'don't do it'."

She added: "Some previous studies have found that if the ECG is normal (no ST elevation) the patient can still have severe coronary disease and therefore needs a coronary angiography, followed by coronary angioplasty, to clear the blocked vessel."

The current study aimed to discover whether performing urgent coronary angiography, and PCI if required, would improve survival in all patients with out of hospital cardiac arrest (both those with ST elevation and those without).

The study included 70 patients who had out of hospital cardiac arrest between 2006 and 2009. Successful urgent coronary angiography and PCI improved hospital survival in all patients with acute coronary syndrome. The treatment increased hospital survival rates in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) from 51% to 83% (p=0.003) and in non-STEMI (NSTEMI) patients from 55% to 81% (p=0.004).

"In our study, a successful urgent coronary angioplasty improved hospital survival in patients with STEMI and NSTEMI," said Dr Nicolino. "All patients with out of hospital cardiac arrest, if there is no non-cardiac cause, must have an urgent coronary angiography followed by coronary angioplasty if there is coronary disease."

Non-cardiac causes of cardiac arrest which should be ruled out before performing coronary angiography are trauma, brain haemorrhage and metabolic problems such as severe hypoglycaemia.

Dr Nicolino added: "ECG results can be misleading -- we found that ECG detected just one-third of acute coronary syndrome in NSTEMI patients. This means that even if the ECG is not showing ST elevation, you cannot rule out an acute coronary syndrome. Coronary angiography should be performed urgently to see if there is any acute coronary disease which needs treatment with PCI."

Post-resuscitation neurologic injury (PNI) was the biggest complication. This can occur if resuscitation is not performed early enough, since the brain's blood supply stops during cardiac arrest. The 32.8% of patients who had PNI were at the greatest risk of death. Early signs of PNI were associated with underuse of coronary angioplasty and PCI.

Provided there was no neurological injury, MI patients who had angioplasty after cardiac arrest achieved the same one-year survival rates as patients with MI alone.

The first heart rhythm was a ventricular fibrillation (VF) or a ventricular tachycardia (VT) in 62% of patients. Most of these patients had an acute coronary syndrome (STEMI or NSTEMI). The incidence of VF and VT was the same in STEMI and NSTEMI patients. "For many years we have thought that patients with STEMI have a greater arrhythmic risk than NSTEMI patients," said Dr Nicolino. "But we found that both STEMI and NSTEMI patients are at high risk of arrhythmias."

She added: "If the first recorded rhythm is a VF or a VT an acute coronary syndrome is highly probable and it's important to perform a coronary angiography immediately without waiting for a diagnosis of infarction (using an enzyme test)."

Dr Nicolino concluded: "Patients with out of hospital cardiac arrest must be managed by cardiologists, intensive care doctors and anaesthesiologists. This team can save the brain from injury using cooling therapy, and save the heart and life of the patient using coronary angioplasty."

PFT: Ex-Steelers doctor faces steroids charges

Patriots Seahawks FootballAP

Jets linebacker Calvin Pace recently called the Patriots? no-huddle offense ?borderline illegal.?? The Jets apparently believe that it?s the officials, not the Pats, who are failing to follow the rules.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has explained to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that the Jets will be emphasizing to officials the provisions that allow defenses to react and adapt to changes made in the offensive lineup.

?It?s going to be a major point of contention before [our] game with the officials to make sure that they know the rule is when they substitute we?re permitted to substitute,? Pettine told Mehta.

?If the officials permit [the Patriots] to do that, then the game is going to become chaos,? Pettine said.? ?That?s the problem.? Because we?re going to be running guys on.? We need to make sure that that is enforced for this game, because we found examples on tape where it has not been.? Then it?s impossible.? Now you can?t defend it.?

The rulebook makes it clear that the officials have the responsibility to ensure that the defense has a fair chance to adjust to lineup changes.? Per Mehta, Rule 5, Section 2, Article 10 states that ?if a substitution is made by the offense, the offense shall not be permitted to snap the ball until the defense has been permitted to respond with its substitutions. . . . The offense is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line of scrimmage and snapping the ball in an obvious attempt to cause a defensive foul (i.e. ? too many men on the field). . . . The umpire will stand over the ball until the Referee deems that the defense has had a reasonable time to complete its substitutions.?

?When they change, that should trigger the ability for us to change,? Pettine said.? ?I?m all for the no-huddle and one grouping.? Whoever you put out there, you better be prepared to go through a whole series and be out there for a while.? And that?s fine.? When they change, we need to be given the right to change . . . and we?re going to make sure that right is given to us.?

And that?s the difference between hitting the accelerator with versatile players on the field and shuttling in other players quickly in the hopes of catching the defense with its pants down.

Should the Jets be taking their concerns public?? In a roundabout way, they are complaining about the officiating ? not from their own games, but from the games involving other teams.? The comments are, in essence, a more subtle version of Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride?s complaint that 49ers defensive end Justin Smith ?gets away with murder.?

And now the question becomes whether Pats coach Bill Belichick will rebuke the Jets, Harbaugh-style, for both criticizing and influencing officiating.? Because, at its core, that?s precisely what the Jets are doing.

If it works on Sunday, it will have been brilliant.
