Zynga slashes outlook as shares plunge

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Zynga Inc, the social gaming company, slashed its 2012 earnings outlook after its second-quarter results badly missed Wall Street's targets, sending its stock plunging more than 40 percent to a record low.

The huge miss for Zynga, creator of the "Farmville and "Hidden Chronicles" games, dragged down shares of Facebook Inc, which relies on the game publisher for some 15 percent of its revenue.

Zynga slashed its 2012 earnings outlook to 4 to 9 cents a share, down from a previously projected 23 to 29 cents.

Zynga was a star in the tech world when it debuted on public markets last December. But since then Wall Street has turned its back on the company as it has begun to flounder in the face of intense competition from rival casual games makers and users who have abandoned its predominantly Web-based games for mobile titles.

"The quarter is a disaster," said Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia. "I think that it's looking more and more like this was a fad because they've introduced so many new games, yet EBITDA continues to come down," he said, referring to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.

"The company has been saying for some time that declining traffic doesn't matter and clearly it does. The decline in some of their top games in terms of traffic has been huge."

Zynga, founded by CEO Mark Pincus, reported quarterly revenues of $332.4 million, below the average analyst estimate of $344.12 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Shares in Zynga plummeted 35 percent to as low as $3.00 in after-hours trade, from a close of $5.078 on Nasdaq.

Shares of Facebook slid almost 7 percent to $27.33, from a close on the Nasdaq of $29.34. Zynga is the largest provider of games on Facebook, which is due to report quarterly results on Thursday .

On an adjusted basis, Zynga reported a loss of $22.8 million, or 3 cents a share, compared with a profit of $1.3 million a year ago.

Police: Cal Ripken's mom abducted, now safe

By ALEX DOMINGUEZ

updated 6:20 p.m. ET July 25, 2012

ABERDEEN, Md. - Cal Ripken Jr.'s 74-year-old mother was found with her hands bound in the back seat of her car Wednesday after she said she was kidnapped at gunpoint a day earlier at her home outside Baltimore and driven around blindfolded by her abductor, police and neighbors said.

Investigators do not know the kidnapper's motive and there was no ransom demand for Vi Ripken's release, Aberdeen Police Chief Henry Trabert said at a news conference.

The gunman forced Ripken into her silver Lincoln Continental between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday, police said. She was found bound and unharmed but shaken about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday near her home in Aberdeen, about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore.

When asked if police believe the kidnapper knew who he was abducting, Trabert did not answer, saying investigators don't know the motive or if the suspect has any ties to the Ripken family.

A next-door neighbor said Vi Ripken told him her kidnapper didn't seem to know that her son was the Hall of Fame infielder nicknamed "Iron Man" for playing in 2,632 consecutive games during his 21-year career with the Baltimore.

Gus Kowalewski said he spoke with Vi Ripken later Wednesday morning and she told him the gunman tied her hands and put a blindfold on her, but said he wouldn't hurt her.

"He lit cigarettes for her, they stopped for food," Kowalewski said. "He said, 'I'm not going to hurt you. I'm going to take you back,' and that's what he did."

Kowalewski said Ripken told him the gunman originally planned to put tape over her eyes.

"But he didn't do that because she said 'please don't do that 'cause I'm claustrophobic,'" said Kowalewski, a 72-year-old retired autoworker.

Instead, the gunman put some type of mask or blinders on her, and she could see somewhat out the sides, he said.

Ripken told her neighbor the gunman also didn't seem to know she was part of the Ripken family, who is well-known throughout the Baltimore area and to baseball fans all over.

"He said he just wanted money and her car," Kowalewski said.

Three years after voluntarily ending his Iron Man streak, Ripken Jr. retired in 2001. He is the chairman and founder of Ripken Baseball Inc., which he runs along with his brother, Bill.

He owns three minor-league baseball teams, including the Single A IronBirds based at the Ripken Baseball complex in Aberdeen, a middle-class area of about 15,000 people. Kowalewski said Ripken told him the gunman asked her about items in the car related to the Ironbirds and did not seem to know about the team.

Mike Hudson, 43, whose mother lives across the street from Ripken, said he was surprised the kidnapper came back to the neighborhood because police were swarming over the area about midnight.

"It's just hard to believe the guy came all the way back on the street and dropped her off. That makes me believe he was local, very local," said Hudson, who is staying at his mother's house while visiting with his daughter.

"I came out again at like five something, and all that scene was gone, I remember that. When I came out at eight, it was all crazy again with helicopters going over and I saw the car right away," Hudson said.

Ripken's car didn't appear to be damaged, he said.

"This has been a very trying time for our family, but we are grateful and relieved that mom is back with us, safe and healthy," the Ripken family said in a statement. "We want to thank everyone for their tremendous support, especially all of the law enforcement agencies that worked so hard and quickly."

Investigators determined that Ripken was missing Tuesday night after talking to Baltimore County Police, who notified the media about her disappearance shortly before she was found. The county borders the one where Aberdeen is located.

Aberdeen authorities have asked Baltimore County Police not to release its 911 tapes because the investigation is continuing. Police also would not say whether Ripken's credit or ATM cards had been used.

Vi Ripken described her abductor as a tall, thin white man with glasses wearing camouflage clothing, but police had no other details. The FBI and Maryland State Police were also involved in the investigation.

Ripken's brother, Bill, played second base in the major leagues. The two were managed for a time on the Orioles by their father and Vi's husband, Cal Ripken Sr., who died in 1999.

The family said that it could not comment further due to the ongoing investigation.

After the gunman left, Ripken honked her car's horn until a neighbor found her, Kowalewski said. He said he was surprised the honking didn't wake him up. Someone reported a suspicious car to authorities and she was found, police said.

Vi Ripken is founding chairwoman of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, which, according to its website, helps to build character for disadvantaged young people. Besides Cal and Bill, she has another son and a daughter.

The Ripken Baseball complex also is home to the annual Cal Ripken World Series for 11- and 12-year-olds. Cal Ripken Baseball is the name for the 5-to-12-year-old division of the Babe Ruth League.

Ripken's business empire also includes youth baseball camps and clinics, a minor-league stadium design firm, a merchandising arm and a charitable foundation. Ripken has no formal role with the Orioles but has spoken about his desire to return to the team.

Ripken works as a studio analyst for TBS during its postseason baseball coverage. He is a pitchman for brands including Energizer, Under Armour and Chevrolet.

The Tech Industry and Construction Industry find a bridge to merge ...

There is no escaping from the fact that construction projects require a lot of work. Materials, labor, and meeting project deadlines are the most common issues that need to be addressed. It is almost impossible to find all these factors taken care of in just one stroke. But, as always, the World Wide Web comes to our rescue with the launch of BidsList.

There are some platforms that offer the ability to find construction workers, or reviews regarding past projects from contractors. However they are still lacking several aspects when it comes actually hiring a service worker for your job.? The biggest problem on any service job isn?t necessarily finding a worker, its finding a worker who is going to perform up to your expectations. BidsList provides not just one area of service, but the entire package.? BidsList creates a process, similar to an attorney, to ensure both parties are treated equal throughout the entire project.?

Bidslist offers full service verification process for residential as well as commercial construction projects in the United States. The main reason to choose BidsList is not for their advanced technology, but for the process BidsList has created.? The platform was made to be fairly simple since the target audience is not always the tech savvy type.? Any construction jobs must be seen in person prior to a professional providing an accurate estimate.? That is why BidsList provides a live person to facilitate every aspect of a construction project for both the BidsList client, as well as the professionals chosen to bid on the project.

Bidslist also addresses the geographical factor for your construction project. For example; if you are a consumer based in San Diego, you will be recommended with quality providers from San Diego instead of say San Francisco.? Anybody can pull up the internet and find a provider, but with BidsList, you actually have a live human to help you decide what professional is best for your specific project.? This feature of saving of time is particularly useful in commercial construction, where time is the essence. In some cases you may have deadlines or simultaneous projects going on at once.? Having a neutral 3rd party to arrange meetings, create contracts, and facilitate funds allows professionals the ability to focus on their work instead of all the minor details.

Professionals are never swindled out of their payment with the process BidsList created. In order for a consumer or business to use Bidslist?s service, one must have funds verified into their BidsList account before scheduling times for estimates take place.? Each job is case by case and must be seen in person to provide an accurate estimate.? BidsList gives you a good understanding of past projects in your area so you have some idea of price range.? Obviously materials, labor, and location are still big factors when pricing out a project.?

BidsList Reps makes sure every participant in the project knows what to expect before they start, as well as makes the professional list BidsList as an additional insured on their insurance policy.? This weans out the contractors who do not stand by their work performance.? If a contractor is afraid to use BidsList as a service, it might mean that they are not willing to take fault for any accidents they might cause on the job.

Weak economy breeds more office rivalries

By Allison Linn, TODAY

If your office sometimes feels more like an Olympic boxing ring than the collaborative environment you hear about in human resources materials, you can at least take comfort?that you?re not alone.

A newly released survey finds that nearly half of senior managers at U.S. companies think employees are more competitive with each other than they were a decade earlier.

The telephone survey, of 1,013 senior managers at companies with 20 or more employees, found that only 4 percent of the managers think employees are less competitive with one another than a decade ago.

It was conducted in August 2011 and released last week by Office Team, a temporary administrative staffing agency.

Blame the years of living with the uncertainty of a tight job market and a high unemployment rate. Experts say?there are many more workers than jobs, which?means workers have started to feel threatened by their peers.

?There?s only so much room in the lifeboat,? said Jane Cranston, a New York career coach.

That, in turn, means people will try harder to stand out individually, in some cases even if it comes at the expense of succeeding as a group.

?A lot of the competition at work is (because) you want to look good for the boss so that if someone gets fired, it?s the other guy and not you,? said Ron Humphrey, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University?s business school.

Those fears aren?t wholly unfounded. Although companies aren?t cutting workers like they were a few years ago, employment growth has remained painfully slow. The unemployment rate stood at 8.2 percent in June.

Of course, there are plenty of benefits to being competitive. Timothy Judge, a management professor at the University of Notre Dame, noted that research has shown that the best athletes are also the most competitive.

But particularly in U.S. office environments that focus on teamwork and collaboration, you can get into trouble if your competitive streak makes you the jerk at work.

?There?s some optimal range. If you seem arrogant and imperious, you may get a certain level of respect, but I think you?ll be seen as difficult,? Judge said.

But on the other hand, he noted, ?If you continually undersell yourself, you?re not going to get recognized.?

Judge also noted that there?s another possible explanation for the fact that more people appear to be out to one-up their co-workers: Narcissism. He said research also has shown that narcissism is on the increase, and ?narcissists like to show off.?

Experts say there are ways to stand out from your peers without coming across as a jerk, or a narcissist. Here are some tips.

Work smarter, not necessarily harder: Cranston, the career coach, notes that many women fall into the trap of working hard but never getting noticed. She recommends that employees try to make sure they are devoting at least some time to the right work, including the projects people at the top care about, and not sweating all?the small stuff.

Humphrey notes that it?s the person who seeks out the tough, complex assignment that is more likely to get noticed.

?Some people work really hard at some of the more simple, mundane tasks. They think the way to get ahead is to be a busy worker bee, but that just proves you?re a busy worker bee," he said. "The way you get promoted is by showing you can take on the leadership tasks."

Take credit for good work: Cranston also notes that many women shy away from giving themselves a pat on the back, instead letting the group take credit for their efforts.

?Women say ?we? when it?s ?I,?? she said.

Another problem is the boss who takes credit for everyone else?s work. To mitigate that problem, she recommends developing a signature style so leaders will recognize you did the work even if your boss is the one presenting it.

Network: If you want to get promoted, or just avoid a pink slip, Cranston recommends that you make sure the people in the top positions get to know you -- even if that means riding the elevator a few extra times or making extra trips to the bathroom.

?I think it?s harder to fire a face,? she said. ?It?s easier to lay off a name on a chart.?

Build loyalty: Humphrey?s research has shown that people who are pushy or aggressive about forcing themselves into a leadership position don?t necessarily do well.

On the other hand, people who are high on empathy are more likely to emerge as the leader because they understand better what motivates people.

?Instead of trying to dominate, they build support,? he said.
